Encores did a production years ago, apart from the concept album only two staged productions ever done.
I enjoyed the Encores, but the fact is the show itself mostly just kind of sits there. The concept album is (mostly) fantastic, though. The score has some great songs. Good melodies and wry Randy Newman wit. Not to mention the recording cast! (Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Randy, Don Henley, Elton John...). I remember thinking the way the score was configured in the concert was not as compelling as the album. I think it was a David Mamet book? Not good.
I'd love to hear this concert, though. Reeve Carney in the Randy Newman role certainly makes it a completely different thing lol.
I sadly only saw this was happening after I got home from Tokyo on Saturday Australia time, otherwise I would have skipped across from Japan to see it on Saturday or Sunday. That cast is certainly interesting. Thanks for the info scary.
I saw the Saturday night performance. Excellent cast and orchestra. It was a terrific evening, but i was expecting both the book and music. The concert was mainly songs from Randy Newman’s Faust. The plot was summarized by writer/actor Jordan Temple. His narration was funny, but he made a number of references to current day people and events that obviously wouldn't have been in the original. Reeve Carney ended his final number highlighting Randy Newman who was in the audience.

Is there any chance this might have a life, or is it one of those that just needs to be a forgotten musical?
