Rant regarding Critics#1

I am so happy for Spring Awakening. They received such great reviews, I hope this gives them the audience they deserve.
However, there is one critic that I have biten my tongue about so many times before.
I find Mr. Matthew Murray to be a very happy person. I find that most of the reviews that I have read of his to be pans. I am not sure that this man really does enjoy anything.
I actually found his reveiw of Spring Awakening to be at points mean. His criticism of John Gallagher seemed at a point to be personal. He said "obnoxious overacting" and "Gallagher's performance is embarrassingly anti-human". This is the total opposite of everything I have read and not what I saw on the stage.
I am not sure if this man just likes to hear himself talk or he just is that out of touch.
His professional review is the only one I have seen that is SO negative. I think that maybe he should consider a job change, something that is more fitting his negative reviews.
I completely understand and agree that everyone has the right to their opinion but come on so much negativity is just not good for one person.

This reminds me of something that bothers me, too. I feel like meanness and bitchiness have become synonymous with criticism, as if that's the only way to do it, and like the criticism community has become some sort of contest for who can have the bitchiest review. I don't believe in that.
I want to be a professional critic, and I've met people in the business who after asking what I'm in school for, actually refuse to talk to me. They get all offended and then avoid me like the plague. It's sad that that's what the reputation brings on.
