Rashad Lead or Support?

Should Phylicia Rasahd been in the supporting actress category? I think so. In the play, the mother is a supporting category no matter how you slice it. Claudia McNeil was a supporting actress. So why was Rashad bumped up to lead? Variety says this morning she's the firstblack actress to win a lead Tony in a play. Guess that answers that. The Halle Berry Award.

But remember that Tony awards gave Tammy Grimes a supporting award for starring in Unsinkable Molly Brown. WEIRD

re: Rashad Lead or Support?

The people who market the shows knew that Audra is the darling of the Tony voters and had very good chance at a win. Why pull a Wicked (new catch phrase) and nominate both in the same category and hurt your chance of a win?
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"

re: Rashad Lead or Support?

In this production Rashad is definitely the lead because Combs, although charismatic and competent, does not dominate as Walter should. The Tony people got it right.
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!
