it's sad that more people did not tune-in to this production:

Namo: my posts, yours, several others took this on last week, in response to the naysayers about the supposedly small numbers for Part One. I won't repeat our POV. But...
I had another glass-half-full reaction to the Perestroika numbers: the same syndrome happened on Broadway. Remember, Perestroika opened six months after Millenium debuted (and had sold out the Kerr, often). Many felt Part One was a wholly satisfying evening unto itself. When Perestroika came along, they said "but I already SAW Angels in America." To my surprise, even savy theatergoers thought they'd HAD the experience. They liked it, just didn't want more. It's the strength of Kushner's craft that Millenium feels as complete as it is. Perestroika did NOT have the same b.o. bump after the initial debut; the show had a decent run, but only survived one full change of cast.
So I think this dip shouldn't be approached in exactly the same way a 2nd night of, say, LONESOME DOVE would be evaluated. A certain percentage of HBO subscribers probably felt they'd invested sufficient time--and why not believe, as on B'way, that a large percentage appreciated it. I am still convinced the filmed play will have a long shelf life, repeated on HBO, and then available on DVD.

auggie,
i'm surprised about the impression of people who may have thought "i already saw that" when part 2 opened on broadway. each piece has its merits and detractions, but even though i enjoyed part 1 more, it would be like only seeing the first half of citizen kane if i did not see the resolution.

The fact that it even got made and that anybody in this artistically challanged country gave a hoot gives me a ray of hope. It's much like the film "The Hours," somehow against all odds, every now and then art happens.
Bless you, Mike Nichols.

PS Let me hastily add: No matter how few people see it, at least now, unlike the theatrical production, IT EXISTS FOR ALL TIME. No one can take that away from Tony and Mike or me, I plan on being buried with the freakin' DVD. Hey, a "success d'estime" is better than . . . well . . . a lot of things, you know?

I've finally gotten time to watch AIA. I think it's too heady for a lot of people. The language is poetic and profound. I think most of it goes right over people's heads. Plus, it isn't a happy cartoon version of gay people--it's gritty, dirty, real.
I think it's brilliant and over time, the numbers will have grown.

Posted: 12/18/03 at 8:50amI think the reason is obvious. Huckleberry Hound is a gay fantasia that even MM can understand.
