"BTW, you're not winning any arguments by bashing Wicked in a thread about another show by the same composer.
Never bashed Wicked, I actually kinda liked it. I bashed the people who come to NYC and with an overabundance of theatre, opera and dance to be seen, elect to see Wicked for the twentieth time.

Why?
They are supporting live theatre and seeing the shows they enjoy. Just because the shows aren't ones you would see over and over, doesn't mean they aren't worth being enjoyed by someone else.

Hmmmm...as much as stuff like this has a way of making my skin crawl, this time it doesn't as much mostly because there's a special purpose to it all being a senior thesis.
I know that isn't the sole purpose but it makes it not as irritating than when some pretentious director swoops in and claims he is to save an old irrelevant show for today's audiences. And what results is a piece of crap completely shunning theatrical conventions and thus everything that made a theatre piece enjoyable for people who still enjoy live theatre.
While the "UPDATE for TODAY" on the ad is pure bull and insulting for today's audiences, it's now a common strategy used to freshen the image of a show so it can get butts in seats. Still a dumbsh*t way to sell and promote a show, as rubbing a couple of brain cells together will produce a way to do that without insulting anyone, but meh. Such is the time and effort invested in theatre today.

I agree with that. It sounds like a mess--but they HAVE gotten legal permission to do it, and this isn't some great big revival. So, who cares?

Just to clarify a few things, the production is supported by the Princeton Program in Theatre. This means that all of the rights were obtained properly, and it's not just "some student" having his way with the material. In fact, the guy who re-orchestrated the music spoke with Stephen Schwartz about the project and got his OK. Adam is an incredible guy who is also quite talented. I saw the production last night and thought that they did the show a service by adding a new, haunting perspective to the original material. The leading player/Pippin suffers from PTSD that causes schizophrenia. These war themes are more relevant to us today, as was accented by the projection work on the center screen. I know that Pippin is considered a classic by some, but if you have an open mind, this production is one of the reasons why live theatre should (and does) fascinate us all.
PS To the person who was wondering about seeing it at Preview, you can absolutely! There will be free tickets for admitted students!
