Of course I remember Smith. An old friend was in it and so I am prejudiced in its favor but it was a charming send up of genre musicals. There was an Agnes Demille dream ballet, and a De Beque character and a character-type big guy plus an assortment of stock types. One character was an old man who couldn't remember his lines so to save money, they put off hiring an older actor until the last minute reasoning that if he wasn't supposed to know his lines, then why spend the money having someone learn the lines. I am not making this up. he never did learn the lines.
It ran only two weeks at the the Eden Theatre (now the Village East Cinemas), and the producers couldn't raise the financing to move it uptown to the Alvin as was announced, so Smith died.
Don Murray was utterly charming as a man who couldn't sing or dance trapped in his life turned into a Broadway musical. The only trouble with him was that when he finally did get to sing and dance, he couldn't do it that well.
Some of the Dames At Sea folk were involved putting this together.
I think the orchestrations for Smith were by Jonathan Tunick. At any rate, they are marvelous. Some of his finest work.

How about some obscure shows like Christy?

Ethan Mordden writes favorably and intriguingly about SMITH in his latest (and final)installment in his decade-by-decade Broadway musical series. Too bad there are no materials available to give it a listen-to or a look-see.
Anyone remember
The Earl and the Girl?
How about Fine and Dandy?
