Posted: 10/11/04 at 7:30pmI'm writing an essay right now and I am trying to think of the right word. I know a movie has a movie score, and of course musicals have their songs, but what is the opening music without lyrics at the beginning of a show called. Overture, correct? It's been a looooong ass day and I'm just drawing blanks.

But it could also be a Prelude, Introduction or Opening Act One as well, depending on the show.

"But it could also be a Prelude, Introduction or Opening Act One as well, depending on the show."
all of these would qualify as song titles, very unoriginal song titles. the generic word for that portion of a score is Overture. not every show has one, but if the first song fits the criteria, overture it is.
