I finally got the dvd (and i must say withnessing my professor, and entire class smelling that dvd case was priceless)and i decided that i really want to do the stage version. So the main questions are; Who holds the rights? and What changes are there between the stage version and the movie? The other thing i was wondering is if its specifically written for jack to also play jesus, as opposed to say... the lecturer doing it.
There were a lot of beat changes for the movie. You can get the LA cast recording online and that will give you a fair idea how different it is.
I don't think the rights are available for the show yet.

Regional theatres have been doing it for quite a while.
The rights for the show were out but a theatre in St Louis stiffed them on the royalties and the licence fee. I highly doubt they'll be out there anytime soon.
Although from what I hear, NYU is putting it on.

Bard is putting on a production of it right now, they're in rehearsals.

I *really* need to buy this DVD. Especially because I want to smell the case!
For those who are interested I have a completely legal "soundtrack" of the movie. Essentially my friend ripped the audio of the DVD, tracked it and threw away the dialogue.
Let me know if you want it. It's like watching the movie with your eyes closed.

IS that legal?
Haha, don't get too excited about smelling the DVD. It just smells like chocolate.

"Although from what I hear, NYU is putting it on."
Who? Where? Couldn't find anything upon googling.
No, I do not think that is not legal.
I heard through a friend that NYU is putting it on. My friend at NYU was pissed because she's a freshman and can't audition.

Hey, Reefer Madness is being done by NYU students but is being performed at The Looking Glass Theater on 57th between 9th and 10th (I believe that is the address).
I am actually choreographing the show, after most recently choreographing the successful production of Bat Boy that was done at NYU this past fall. Haley Treco is directing and Will Van Dyke is music directing. The writers of the show gave Haley their blessings after hearing from the writers and cast of the Original Bat Boy off broadway how good our production was. Everyone come see REEFER. It opens in May. Should be a blast.

The show opens May 3, for all interested. I will post ticket information as soon as I find out more. Rehearsals begin in a week.

Jonart, I saw the show off-Broadway (twice), and it's got parts that are pretty different. The movie cuts out about 10 minutes of ending that happen after where the movie ends. There's also a "showgirl" character that walks in periodically with important messages about reefer written on big cards that was not at all in the movie (though it makes sense that wouldn't work on screen).
That's cool that NYU is doing it, it was too bad it closed after such a short run. Kristen Bell I think was still in Tisch when she starred in it.
I really want to see this. Not only because I'd love to see it live, but also because I know Haley and this is seriously one of my favorite shows.

Dave!
My rose!
I basically just joined this thing so I could say hello to you... I can't believe I was just name-dropped! Hahaha.
As Billy said, we're doing Reefer in May! I really hope all of you Zombies that are in NY get to come see it (you too, Dave, road trip with my family or something). We go into rehearsals this Tuesday and we have a ridiculously talented (not to mention ridiculously attractive) cast! I don't know, I'm just excited that we're getting to do this show, hopefully we can live up to the expectations of all those original fans who were sad to see it close so early Off-Bway. A lot of pressure, but it's a fun show no matter what, I think a good time is going to be had by all :)
We should have some ticketing info in 2 or 3 weeks!
