I think they did a pretty good job with the show, though this is coming from someone who didn't get a chance to see the professional production when it was in town. The sets were well done (and from what I've seen, pretty close to the original, particularly the office set) and the performances were excellent. I think the two things that let them down were some sound issues (particularly the mix...bring up the dialogue please!) and some extremely slow scene transitions (took forever for that damn curtain to come back up everytime!). But overall Id heartily recommend the production.
I was lucky enough to see THE PRODUCERS on Broadway during previews, just before it officially opened, so I got to see it with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
I saw both productions in Melbourne and Sydney, which I thought were equally as good (though Reg Livermore was a tad too old - wish they'd gotten Anthony Warlow).
I'll be seeing it this weekend. Thanks for the positive feedback.
I really enjoyed it. The weakest link was Chris King as Max Bialystock. The scene changes were slow, and they could have done much better with the PowerPoint projections, which were used in abundance. For a few dollars, they could have used them for a real wow factor, especially for the finale. The best scene was the "Unhappy"/"I want to be a producer" songs. Nice sets, cleverly staged.
