What makes a theatre considered a regional theatre? Is it an equity theatre not in NY? Or just a theatre that pays its actors? Or is a community theatre also considered a regional theatre? My first thought was that it is equity theatre outside of NYC but I really don't know. This has confused me for a while now.

Regional refers to League Of Regional Theatres (LORT). There are actually 5 in NYC.

It is a very specific equity contract. NOT community theatre. Most LORTs are allowed a percentage of non-eq performers per production.

Not all eq theatres outside NYC are considered Regional. There are about 50 different contracts a theatre could be operating under.

There is also LOA to LORT, which stand for Letter of Agreement. This is a concession to theatres which are not in a financial position to become full LORT, but hope to one day. They are under the same rule book but eq bends salaries and percentges for LOAs on a case by case basis.

LORT is considered "next best" status on a resume under Production Contract. (Bwy or Natl Tour).
