I was also surprised to see Rosario Dawson in the supporting actress category but I guess that as other people have said, since this in an ensemble piece, she gets recognized as a supporting actress. However, I think Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp should be considered as Leading Actors with the rest of the cast being supporting. I think only Rosario and perhaps Wilson Jermaine Heredias and Anthony Rapp will get some Golden Globe nods. or at least have a chance, for Oscars Rosario is probably the only one that has a chance not because the rest weren't as amazing, but because she's the only one considered a film actress, and her part is probably the one that was more fleshed out.

Best12Bars you are spot on. Rosario had the choice to submit as a Lead Actress but would never have been nominated due it being an ensemble piece. Many actors have made the mistake of sending in sumbissions as Lead's when they were and hence were not nominated. I predict Rosario will be the only actor/actress to be nominated in anything.

"The Oscars are different than any other awards out there, with the exception of the various Guild honors, because they are voted on by peers.

All the other "pre-Oscar" kudos are given out by critics... not peers. This includes the Golden Globes"

This is incorrect. The SAG awards are voted by peers, as are the WGA and DGA, Independent Spirit Awards, etc. In fact, the DGA and the WGA nominations will closely mirror the Oscar nominations for those categories because the same group will nominate for the DGA/WGAs as for the Oscars.

Speaking of the SAG awards, Rent has a shot at the ensemble cast award, but the SAGs are pretty much a joke since it's just actors awarding themselves.

And no, I don't consider Rent to be sexy or political. It would have been sexy if they'd cast YOUNG hot unknowns, like they did with the OBC (except for Daphne) and let some smart and hip director take it on (or why not Michael Greif or even Sam Mendes? Don't even get me started on Spike Lee). Chris Columbus is one of the safest, least interesting, middle of the road directors working. Sexy isn't even in his vocabulary. Notice how the final cut took out anything too dark or sexy (April's suicide, Roger and April's sex scene, etc.)

Rent's message was political back in the mid 90's when it opened. Political now is stuff like Syriana and Munich and Good Night and Good Luck. Young, attractive people dying of AIDS and mocking the establishment through song has a "been there, done that" feeling to it. It's not fresh. Art in the post 9/11 world has to look outward to be relevant, not inward. It's about the big picture, not about how it all affects the individual. Updated On: 12/3/05 at 01:11 AM

TimeSuckage --- Actually, you're incorrect. The Guild awards are voted on by the entire guild memberships. Writers vote for writers, directors vote for directors, and SAG members vote for actors. I was correct in saying that peers vote for peers with these awards.

The Oscars are voted on by Academy members only, which total somewhere around 5,800 members in all branches. There are tens of thousands of actors in SAG, and there are only about 2,250 actors in the Academy membership. Even less than that in the writers branch (about 600, I'm guessing). So, while it's pretty safe to say that all the writers in the Academy are in the Writers Guild and vote for the WGA Awards... NOT all Writers Guild members are in the Academy and vote for the Oscars. Not by a long shot. This is a very select group that votes for the Oscars. Still, I would call them "peers" though. Just a very small group of them. But it's a big misconception that it's the "same group." I don't think 100,000+ SAG members vs. 2,250 Actors Branch members of the Academy is the "same group."

EDIT: Actually let me explain a tiny bit further. The Actors Branch of the Academy will NOMINATE the actors for Oscars... Writers Branch will NOMINATE the writers for Oscars, etc.

When it comes down to the final voting, the ENTIRE membership votes for the winners. Actors vote for all awards, writers vote for all awards, etc. So it's not even just a "smaller group" of WGA members who pick the winning screenplay awards, it's the entire Academy membership. Hope that makes sense.

But that's the way it's done.

I'm sorry I don't have anything intelligent to say, but I agree that Anthony deserves something for all his work over the years. Maybe not one of these posh Hollywood awards, but SOMETHING!

best12bars, I was interpreting your initial comment to mean that the Oscars are the only awards not voted on by critics, and I think we both agree that that is incorrect. My apologies.

I'm with TimeSuckage on this one: there's very little evidence that RENT will be acknowledged by the Academy at all. I'll be surprised if it even musters one nomination (maybe for Sound?). Most of the major critics panned it, and the movie hasn't made a dent at the box office, nor on the public consciousness. I think the nominations it has gotten so far are anomalies, and from a unestablished organization to boot.

The movie has pretty much stripped RENT of any politics it once had; there's a stronger political message on an episode of FELICITY than here. And more sexuality on a half-baked MTV clip.

Best director? BEST DIRECTOR? the only award this movie deserves less than best director, is Best Cinematography.

I shudder when I read the words "Chris Colombus" and "best" in the same sentence.

While I loved Rent, I really don't think it will get any reputable Academy Award nominations. It just wasn't that type of "big Academy Award we will get a nomination just because" film. But I really think that Jesse L. Martin should win an award, well actually everyone in the cast should, he was fantastic.
