I really think it is getting through to the high school and college students. My son who is a freshman in college is hearing alot about the movie from non-musical people. Especially people are starting to know the song "Seasons of Love."
oh yeah... so many people at my high school know SOL now... they go around singing it and playing it on the piano...
also, everyone keep coming up to me (they know i'm the resident Renthead) and say, "you know rent's being made into a movie??" i feel smart by replying, "yes. i have known for a long time."
a lot of people i didn't expect to be into it are really excited to see it. makes me feel all fuzzy inside. :)
yea, it's so annoying when people come up to me and try and make me excited by saying, "you know rents gonna be a movie right?".

RENT is also getting to middle schools. There hae been SO many kids in my classes who keep coming up to me saying they've seen the commercial and really want to see it.
Yeah, and a bunch of them see my dogtag or RENT t-shirt and ask if I know it's gonna be a movie. In fact, two people just did it today. Plus, two people were singing SoL during classes.

In my World Lit Class we have these things where we write about a given topic and today it was my day to choose. I didn't want to say RENT because nobody else has heard of it except two of us (and the teacher) but before I could choose, my teahcer used the whole board to write "Topic: RENT! THE MOVIE! OUT NOVEMBER 23RD! discuss." So i got a lot of questions asked.
(Oh yeah, and it just so happened I was wearing my RENT shirt.)

I too find it amusing that whenever I wear my "Rent" shirt people ask me if I know that it's being made into a movie. I always reply with "Yeah, I've known for almost a whole year now" and I proceed to blabber on about my undying love for Rent. I already have like 6 different groups that I'm going to go watch the movie with. Even my roommate, who dislikes most musical things, has gotten to know SOL (much to her displeasure) She refuses to go watch it but I'll make her go eventually, lol.
I sort of find it annoying though that people who didn't even know about the musical are all excited about it and acting like hard-core fans when they really know nothing about it. Is this just me?

I feel the same way Thespian... I cringed when a girl told me she couldn't wait to see it b/c the "long haired guy is really hot!"

Ha ha, I just remembered that a girl saw the RENT poster picture I have on my binder and said that, "The long haired guy is so hot!" I found it amusing and annoying at the same time.
the "long haired guy" IS really hot! only without the long hair!! hehe.
"long haired guy is really hot!" I simply reply with "ADAM IS MINE!"

oh gosh...."long haired guy"...I would throw a fit
As long as people don't start referring to Anthony as "the guy with the camera" I think I'll be able to keep my sanity.

The number of people I hear saying "Oh my God, that guy from Law and Order is in Rent!" is getting a little old, too. But it's also exciting, because it means lots of people are going to go see it. :)
And my roommate, who knew absolutely no musicals at the beginning of the year, is about ready to strangle me for getting her addicted to the soundtrack. She plays Out Tonight and Goodbye Love almost constantly. It's pretty awesome.
Edit: I just re-read this, and I did not in any way mean to insult Jesse! I just always want to say to those people, "No, I think you mean the guy from Rent is in Law and Order." :)

I was at a dinner the other day with my roommate and one of her friends and her friend was like
"Yeah so, Rosario Dawson's going to be in a musical with Taye Diggs and that guy from Law & Order"
I just kept my mouth shut
He's hot even with his long hair. Thank you. I chose my avatar for this occasion many months ago. Soon to be unveiled.
If people ask me if I know it's being made into a movie, I just pull something like "oh, yeah! I'm really excited." They'd get scared if I said anything else.

I totally agree with that! I like him so much better with the short hair.
The advertising really is getting around. My favorite is the Law & Order thing. All the time, people are going, "Oh yeah that has that guy from Law and Order in it." My response is always, "Yeah, but he was in Rent FIRST!" One time I got, "I don't know if I can go watch this hard lawyer from Law and Order play a gay guy." (that was nice) "But he was in Rent FIRST so the Rent fans actually had to get used to him playing different characters after that so get over it. Plus, what does him being gay have to do with anything?" Kinda pissed me off.
EDIT: Em, I can't wait to see this avatar!

I remember last year mentioning RENT and the RENT movie to my friend Tierra a lot... and then about three weeks ago she runs up.
"Christina! DUDE! Theres gonna be a RENT movie!"
"Tierra, I've been telling you this for several MONTHS."
"Really? Oh man. We gotta see it!"
Thats the only case of that I've had... all of my other friends just mention it looks really good and they'd like to see it. They've wanted to see the stage version as well, but just haven't gotten really deep into it.
My binder is decorated with rent pictures. One day the person sitting next to me goes, "Wow that girl is really pretty!" pointing to a picture of Angel. I responded with, "That's a guy."
Somehow I don't think she'll be seeing Rent. lol
Who cares if some people are only now becoming aware of Rent because it's a movie?
I'm greatful for anything that gets people interested in theatre or movie musicals.
I'de rather these young girls/boys start to appreciate the talents of real singers/actors as opposed to the media-made pop stars and untalanted pretty faces in bad movies.

Musical_nerd, the same thing happened with me. A freind of mine saw the Angel picture and said she was pretty, I said he was a guy and he freaked out a bit.
Also, today during English there were a bunch of kids coming up to me and saying that they saw the commercial 'cause about half the school knows I love RENT.
