well my very nice freinds gave me a sweet gift for XMAS. I can either go see the Grease tour with Frankie Avalon or the Rent tour. They said I can pick one....what does everyone suggest? I hate to ask the question but are either of these equity productions?? I saw the Rent tour a while back when it was equity but I believe it is not now. Anyone know how it is? Also, I was unable to catch the latest broadway revival of Grease..is this one close?? hmmmm decisions...
i have no opinion on this. i wish you luck on your decision.
The Grease tour is non-equity; at least it was in Sept. when I covered it in Philly for another website.
"Jamey Isenor plays Danny Zuko like an Elvis style body builder. Hanna-Linna-Vosa (Sandy) is cutesy, but vocally fails in "Hopelessly Devouted to You". Jacqueline Colmer's Rizzo has been around a bit too long in study hall, though she redeems herself with some nice acting and a solid delivery with "There are Worse Things I could Do". This updated version brings in some racy language and jestures. The ensamble speeds through the show like a bunch of hyper cartoon teens". Frankie Avalon's cameo as "Teen Angel" was well received in Philly, after all that's his hometown, but it's a small part. Still Avalon looks and sounds pretty darn good for a guy in his 60's. He was predictably charming to speak with after the show."
That's about it. Not great but not the worst production.
Grease the Musical isnt very hot. RENT would be my decision.
Personally, I wouldn't go see either because they're non-Equity, but if you have to choose, go with Grease.
I saw the grease tour with frankie avalon. It was pretty good. He is a wonderful singer and he doesn't look a day over 40. He really surprised me. I am seeing Rent tour in 2 weeks. If I were you, I would see Rent, but it all depends on what you like.
I saw the national tour of Grease when it was in Atlanta, Georgia. I thought that Jamey Isenor did a great job as Danny...He is definitely a Gaston in the making. I was not that impressed with Frankie Avalon, and felt that he was trying to hard to be the center of attention. The rest of the cast blew through the show, and honestly made it a very confusing story. The set was very bland, and after touring for two years, looked extremely worn out. I wouldn't say that it was a terrible production, but between Grease and Rent....I would say Rent!
See Ya!

Frankie Avalon didn't impress me at all. And Grease is so overdone, there will always be another tour of it rolling around...
I have read a lot of Rentheads are happy with the current cast on the tour, even though it is *gasp* non-Equity. Brian Gligor (Mark) has been getting good reviews from them, as well as the actress who plays Maureen, whose name escapes me at the moment.
I would lead toward Rent, but I haven't seen the tour myself.
Grease is the word.
i too am seeing the rent tour when it stops here in chicago! since the rent tour now is non-equity =( r there any changes to it compared to the broadway production (i.e. sets & costumes)? i dont like it when they change that kinda stuff! =( aiite l8r!

Talk about being caught between the horns of a dilemma.
di·lem·ma n. A situation that requires a choice between options that are or seem equally unfavorable.
I myself tend to boycott non-Equity shows, but I broke and I'm taking my little brother to see the non-Equity of CATS.
I would personally go for Rent. Ive heard that for the most part, the cast is excellent.

The non-Equity production of CATS is actually a good quality production. Anne Brummel is amazing!
I perfer RENT. I am also seeing it in two weeks (ROCK ON CLEVELAND!). The girl who plays Maureen graduated from Kent State University, the college right down the street from me and where my sister goes. I also might go there, so it is kind of cool.
