I rented REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA, by LionsGate, this week. It is the rock opera-musical film with Paul Sorvino, Alexa Vega, and Sarah Brightman.

Extremely dark and offbeat film. Lots of gore and blood. Might make some of you feel like you're tripping on acid.

But all in all, I thought I'd recommend it for those who love dark rock operas. There are a lot of songs and is a bunch of musical dialouge (22 songs on soundtracks). I'm not a big fan myself but could appreciate the effort and risk that Twisted Pictures & LionsGate took, with this movie.

Soundtrack is on iTunes. I just went to Blockbuster and rented the DVD.

Be warned: this is real hard rock. "Rent" and "Spring Awakening" come nowhere close to rocking this hard.

Has anyone else seen it?? What are your thoughts?? I appreciated the rock opera value added to the film.

I really wanted to love it, especially since it had all the right elements for me; dark story, Sarah Brightman rocking out, Tony Head singing (loved his singing stints on Buffy), Skinny Puppy's Ogre, for heaven's sake (I was a huge industrial music fan in my youth)...but something just didn't quite gel for me.

It wasn't even Paris Hilton's involvement, which I casually ignored, but I can't quite put my finger on why I felt let down.

This movie sucked ass. Cult movies are born, not made.

There are some great moments, but overall--it was not the most fun. It could have been so much better--even as a campy, cult classic.

QFT.

And I tried so hard to love this movie. The story and visual style were right up my alley. The performances were great and some of the music was even good...but the combination of truly pathetic lyrics and non-stop MTV editing dragged it way, way down.

I love the soundtrack and listen to it often...especially Head's tracks. Some really good songs, imo.

The movie had some moments, but was pretty much a mess. I was curious and was disappointed in the comic book theme which is a cheap way to tell a story, imo.

And by today's standards, not really all that gory.

I couldnt understand a WORD Brightman sang...seriously! But her and Sorvino's operatic voices were great in contrast to the rock/pop voices from the rest. Terrance Zdunich who cowrote the piece has a terrific rock baritone.

I was let down. I thought the story was pretty good as well as the music but the lyrics kinda sucked. I also didn't like Alexa Vega, so it was hard for me to connect emotionally to the main plot. I did however love Sorvino, Brightman and Hilton (yes, seriously). I cared more about Blind Mag and the Rottis.
The visuals were good, the effects were great. I especially like the corpse/hand-puppet trick.
I agree that it was trying to be a cult film, which is an organic process. I can't stand the hype over it, which is what's really killing it for me.

Overall I'd give it a C+

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

Wait.

That was actually Sorvino singing??? I thought it was a stand-in vocalist.

I had no idea he has operatic pipes like that!

LOVE the soundtrack and promoted it like crazy

Then I saw the movie and was VERY disappointed. There was no structure to the movie. It just went scene to scene to scene without a connecting thread. They should have got an actual screenwriter to at least doctor it.
