Review: After the Night and the Music#0

I did student rush for After the Night and the Music yesterday afternoon. The seats were great. They were in the fourth row, with perfect view, for $26. The sad thing is that the show is probably only worth paying $26 for.

The show is three plays, presented in two acts. The first play is called Curtain Raiser. It centers around a lesbian (J. Smith-Cameron) who sits at the bar of a dance hall while her girlfriend (Deirdre Madigan) cuts a rug. Then, a homely man (Eddie Korbich) asks her to dance. At first she refuses, but soon enough they are out and moving. This is by far the best part of the show; Korbich and Smith-Cameron are terrific. Sadly, it is all downhill from there.

Giving Up Smoking is the second play. It was dry, monotonous and dragging. It deals with four people in New York, all waiting for a phone call. This play is chocked full of stereotypes: lonely middle-aged divorcee (Jeannie Berlin), lonely middle-aged gay best friend (Jere Burns), swinging ladies man divorcee (Brian Kerwin), and the aged mother of the gay man (Smith-Cameron, who transcends the material). It was a boring whinefest. And also, I had a really hard time hearing Berlin, and I was in the fourth row. I can't imagine what people in the back of the orchestra and the mezzanine could ad could not hear. She needs to learn to project better.

The last act is called Swing Time. The name says it all. Two New York couples (Smith-Cameron, Burns, Berlin and Kerwin) unsuccessfully swap mates. I didn't laugh once.

Skip this one.

I had tickets in the balcony and could hear OK. I enjoyed the entire show. Agree that the first act was the best, but the third was very funny. The "potato salad" joke near the end of the act had laughing for a long time.
