Reviews from my London Trip 8/19-8/26

Well, I'm back from my trip, sitting during my lunch hour very jet-lagged, but what an awesome trip. I had fantastic weather, saw London and 8 shows: Les Miserables, Priscilla, Billy Elliot, La Cage, Sister Act, Blood Brothers, the Mousetrap, and Oliver!

I didn't purchase a program at all, so apologize that I do not have cast lists.

Wednesday Evening, 8/19 - Les Miserables

I arrived in London tired as hell, but after my friend met me at the airport (and surprised me by buying tickets on the express train into London), we stopped by his place to drop off my suitcase and wandered St. James's Park and eventually made our way towards Leicester Square. I wanted to see a show, but was tired, so my friend suggested starting with an old favorite. We popped into the box office and bought the 15 pound restricted view tickets in the balcony.

Seats were actually better than I thought. The only time the view distracted was during A Little Fall of Rain. I haven't seen the show in over five years and it again confirmed why I love it. There was an understudy on for Eponine, but for the life of me, I'm blanking on her name.

Standout for me was Valjean and Madame Th?nardier. My friend remarked that he thought Cosette was only so-so, but I think Cosette is always so-so because her character is so bland. (The only person I've felt breathed some life into the role was Judy Kuhn.)

On a side note, introduced to the idea of ice cream at the interval - and love it! (Also appreciated it because the theatre was so terribly warm that evening).

Thursday Matinee, 8/20 - Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

My friend was working on Thursday, so got two days seats for the evening performance of Billy Elliot in the morning - my friend lives down the street from the Victoria Palace Theatre - and went exploring. I dropped by the Priscilla box office a couple of hours before the matinee show. Ended up with seat in the back of the stalls (Row S) regularly priced at 39 pounds that the man at box office sold me for 25. Marked as slightly restricted, but it wasn't too bad at all, I thought. If I inched down and shifted my head, I could actually get the very top in view and I appreciated the TV screens on the side that did broadcast the very top of the stage.

The show itself was fun, plain and simple. Pure fluff and I knew so going in. The audience was so very into it and that just helped me enjoy it even more. I in particular liked Tony Sheldon's performance as Bernadette. And the costumes were amazing, once again revealing that drag queens have far better legs than I do, alas.

Office phone's a ringing...more reviews/comments to come.

glad you had a good trip to London, from your list looks like you saw some great shows, thanks for doing your review.

Glad you liked Les Mis, a timeless classic of stage and one of my all time favourite show. Priscilla I recommended this to you, even though not being a big fan of the show, it is still a broadwayWorld West End favourite, hoped you loved the mirror ball and the bus, a bus like that i could easily wait a couple of hours for.

Thanks for your reviews so far.

If you went to the Priscilla matinee on 20th August, wasn't that when Tony Sheldon did a post-show Q&A for Kids Week (did you stay for it or did it require a separate ticket)? You're right about the audience being 'so very into it ' - that's almost always been the case in my experience, makes for a great atmosphere and gives proceedings a great buzz.

It's been ages since I saw Les Mis but I doubt I'd ever tire of it. My first WE musical and still one of my all-time favourite scores.

Sounds like you picked a really great range of shows, I'm looking forward to reading your other reviews... re: Reviews from my London Trip 8/19-8/26
