The Tony Administration Committee now rules on all shows that have had major previous productions, determining whether they are eligible as new works or as a revival. If a show had a prominent or long-running Off-Broadway production, or has been a part of the theatrical landscape in regional theatres for years, most likely it will be determined to be a revival, even if it hasn't played Broadway previously. Assassins had a major New York production at Playwrights Horizons in 1991, and even though the show never played on Broadway before last year's production, it was deemed a revival. Sight Unseen, Reckless and Twelve Angry Men, though all new to Broadway this season, were all categorized as revivals by the committee.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
