re: Riedel on Tony fever

That article confirms what I have always thought: The Tony's do not have anything to do with artistic or entertainment value and they are a scam.

Awards are fun and all, but I think it's strange that ANYONE would think the winning of an award would have anything to do with artistic worth.
Behind the fake tinsel of Broadway is real tinsel.

re: Riedel on Tony fever

I can not fathom finding award shows fun. They are a load of self-congratulatory nonsense. The people involved certainly think of the award as being for artistic achievement.

Well if the award show is written by Bruce Vilanch they will be entertaining.
Don't underestimate the hard work involved or the talent.

Artistic Worth? You can't put Artistic Worth on your mantlepiece! You can't invite chorus boys homw to see your Artistic Worth! You're nothing without a Tony! Nothing I tell you!

No one stands in front of the mirror pretending to hold their Artistic Worth, practicing their acceptance speech!!

re: Riedel on Tony fever

Having now seen all 4 nominated musicals, it would be a sad thing if Spamalot won. While entertaining, I found it a bit too mocking of the artform, and just a bit too "ripped off" from the film, with most of the music thrown in for really, no reason. Bee on the otherhand, and even Dirty Rotten and Piazza, are great examples of the form, one with great heart, on with great width, and one with lush seriousness. All three, by far, deserve the prize over Spamalot, but I fear, Spam has the advantage at this point.

Award shows never have and never will be about artistic merit! They are purely a PR game and while its fun to get caught up in the hype of the Oscars, and Tony's -- their merits should never be misinterpreted as artistic altruism.

I do it all the time, Joe. And believe me, when I'm looking in the mirror holding my Artistic Worth, it ain't no pretending!
