Posted: 6/13/07 at 4:39pmRiedel was merely discussing the effect of Tony wins on several shows. Some people here are trying to make it appear that he singled out Grey Gardens and was nasty about it. Far from the truth. That's the problem with one person commenting on a column in a less than fair manner and then others taking up the crusade when they haven't even read the column.

Posted: 6/13/07 at 4:42pmWithout having to start a new thread, and not to threadjack, but might I just say that every time I see SPRING AWAKENING, the people cheering around me happen to be adults. I don't know why SA has gotten this WICKEDhead reputation, but many of the show's admirers are actually adults. (All of the people who voted for all of those awards? Adults.)

I am an AVID gardener as I style myself. I have so much invested emotionally in that show. (which, for the record, I went in believing I would hate-I couldn't have been more wrong.)
But, please don't call my heartfelt love of this show and defense of it bitchiness. I just don't think he needs to trumpet his hatred of this show all over the place. It damages its reputation and does have an impact on the show, IMO. (Yes, there are people who read his column besides us.)

Posted: 6/13/07 at 4:45pmGuys, if you thought I get overly defensive about Grey Gardens, you should have heard me years ago when Follies opened. My God. My parents had guests for dinner over who were not big Sondheim fans and not big Follies fans when it first opened. (NO ONE I knew was a big Sondheim fan when he first was getting started with Company, Follies and all that.) I think I was 13 or something. I loved Follies. They went on about how much they hated it. I threw my fork at them.

Posted: 6/13/07 at 4:48pmI was 13 and the fork didn't hit them. I wouldn't do that now. But people were THAT passionate about Follies, just as passionate as they are about Grey Gardens. The two shows, to me, are quite similar.
