Posted: 9/28/06 at 6:48pmAre you kidding me? Grease is going to be revived AGAIN?? Wasn't it just on Broadway, like, 4 yers ago?

Posted: 9/28/06 at 6:55pmSome shows should not be revived for at least 10 years. Grease is one of them

Setting a time limit on revivals is stupid.
Sure, the last revival of GREASE! was tacky and trite, but if Kathleen Marshall can bring something new to the show as she did with THE PAJAMA GAME? Bring it on.

Again it is like apples & oranges
Prior to the recent revival of Pajama, when was it done before ? Grease was done more recently. To keep on reviving the same show over & over & over again is not the answer. Revive shows that have never had a revival, like Lil Abner , and this would be the thing to do

Posted: 9/28/06 at 7:52pmI'm not saying I would prefer to see GREASE over something like LI'L ABNER, but don't dismiss something you know nothing about.

Posted: 9/28/06 at 9:38pmI can't stand Grease, but The Wiz shouldn't open. Maybe The Carmen Project?

Don't count on that "insider" being anything more than a trouble-making staff member who thrives on spreading rumors and causing conflict. There are no plans to close the show anytime soon.

Posted: 9/29/06 at 3:49pmI saw The Producers recently, on Gary Beach's last day, and it was just as funny and fresh as the first time I'd seen it a few years ago. I was amazed at the energy of the cast, given the length of time some of them have been in the show. The audience was thoroughly entertained and gave it a rousing ovation.

Posted: 9/29/06 at 3:50pmDid I say it won't? No. Everything closes - just like everyone dies. I just said there are no plans. And that the "insider" quoted is a complete moron.

Unless Wicked closes, New York would be Oz-ified!

Posted: 9/29/06 at 4:08pmWicked and The Wiz are two totally different shows. The new Wiz looks really interesting from the photos. I really hope it opens. I would love to see more of it and to get the cast recording because of Jame's beautiful voice.

Posted: 9/29/06 at 7:13pmAt some point we really must drop the whole sour grapes "Full Monty" was better argument. Let it go. They didn't win. There are years where the competition is stiff and years where there is no competition and FM did not win that year. Whether you think that the Producers deserved the Tonys or not, the one thing that most producers will tell you is that the show is credited with reviving Broadway for New York and tourist audiences and bringing some interest back to do something other than safe revivals. The show is past its five year run, made a bundle of money for the producers (unlike most shows) and should be respected at least for that, as compared to many shows that open and close and LOSE a bundle of money. Whether you liked it or not, when it is ready to close, it ought (at least) to get a respectful closing instead of booting it out the door as if it were an embarrassment. Any show that adds business to the bottom line for live theater is a welcome addition in my book.

Posted: 9/29/06 at 10:46pmRegarding the Tonys that year...there are two awards I would have given to The Full Monty that The Producers won- Best Score, and Best Featured Actress. I also would have given sets and lighting to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. However, the other 8 awards, I still would have given to The Producers. It was still the best show of that season (if not the best "ever" as some called it when it opened), and deserved that Tony.

Show goes on for 'Producers'
Despite rough patch, tuner vows to hang on
By GORDON COX
Ask Gotham legiters to look into a crystal ball, and a good number of them will tell you "The Producers," no longer the box office juggernaut it once was, will be closing in the not-too-distant future, and that the most likely candidate to take its place in the St. James Theater is another Mel Brooks tuner: "Young Frankenstein."
Maybe. But it's too early to place any bets.
"The Producers" has had a rough time recently. Over the last month, the weekly gross has dipped to as low as $415,000, hardly enough to cover running costs.
But producers of "The Producers" have vowed to hang on. (A B.O.-boosting return of original stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick remains a possibility, but not soon -- Lane begins perfs on Broadway in the play "Butley" Oct. 5, and Broderick stars in Kenneth Lonergan's Rialto-bound new play "The Starry Messenger" in San Diego in January.)
It's also worth pointing out that nobody's seen "Young Frankenstein" yet -- the recently completed first draft, by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, won't get a reading until later this month. The unconfirmed cast is said to include Kristin Chenoweth, Marc Kudisch and Shuler Hensley, with Sutton Foster and Cloris Leachman (reprising her role from the film) also mentioned as potential thesps.
In any event, no one can yet say what kind of shape "Frankenstein" is in, or when it will be ready for a full production.
If Jujamcyn Theaters, owner of the St. James, ends up looking for a replacement for "The Producers" before "Frankenstein" is ready, couldn't the org be tempted by other shows -- like, for instance, "The Wiz"?
That buzzed-about La Jolla Playhouse revival is directed by Des McAnuff, a longtime affiliate of Dodger Theatricals, which also counts Jujamcyn head Rocco Landesman as a member.
