Dear Rob,

I was going to email you privately but I thought I would just come right out on the board as say it publicly. You are to be commended for your latest blog entry. I don't mean to start a flame war against any other site, but many on here have fallen victim, prey, whatever you want to call it to the overly strict and almost dictatorship ways of other message boards. Many have even been banned for questioning their policies and procedures. I understand your frustration, but doubt the people who really need to read your blog, will be.

Best,
Seth

Rob- thank you so much for your latest blog. After checking for responses to a link i made to my own website, and discovering that it had been erased, i was mystified and confused. Now, I just think I'll go post on another website. See everyone in a few weeks when I get over this.

this is how I see it

if BWW wants to be thought of as one of the big boys on the block (ie Playbill.com ) then it should act like it

I don't see the owner of Playbill answering posts on a theatre message board. He does not need to. Simple as that.

If I had a website with 40,000+ hits a day I wouldn't feel the need to go posting on other sites and feeling upset when your post get deleted. Just do your thing and let them do theirs.

Musicals. I see your point, but let me offer this up (and I am no saint!)

"I don't see the owner of Playbill answering posts on a theatre message board. He does not need to. Simple as that."

Not simple when you consider that this site is interactive and not one way like Playbill. I have the utmost respect for playbill.com, but this site and Rob can correct me if I am wrong, is about community. Rob doesn't need to post, you are right, but I am damn glad he does because this site isn't as stuffy because of it. Not to mention I appreciate Rob's blog and commentary much more than other professionals who have their editorials on other sites.

"I wouldn't feel the need to go posting on other sites and feeling upset when your post get deleted."

I don't think Rob was upset. I think he was confused by why a theater website which as he alludes to has the "space" feels the need to delete posts supporting terrific events that we all want to read about.

I read the thread in question. Someone was genuinely asking for information on how to find photos from the event. Why shouldn't Rob answer a question that was asked? Aren't we all here to help each other with stuff like that? He posted that playbill.com, broadway.com and broadwayworld.com all had photos. It's not even like he posted with, to use his word, bias.

Not that I need to defend Rob. Or kiss hiss ass. I've caused enough trouble for him here myself I am sure with some of my posts.

Oh, right. Playbill is better because whoever-the-heck runs it doesn't have a face? Welcome to the Internet- where some "personal" web pages are just about as respected as mainstream media websites. Deigning to respond to people doesn't make this site some humble little operation compared to the lofty Playbill.com. As it happens, I love both sites. And the fact that I know who runs this one, and have spoken to those people, doesn't make me respect it any less.

Ignore my ignorance, but to which other message board was Rob referring to?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Just an observation on my part. I've seen several message boards come and go from major theater sites like B'way.com, Playbill, and if I'm not mistaken Theatermania had a seldom used board. I can only imagine the lack of traffic that first site now gets. Certainly not my first (or last) place to buy tickets or read interviews or reviews. The others I have always visited for news, ticket info, discount codes, seating charts. The "other" board with no polls is only something I read every few days, and post every few months.

But somehow Rob's little site is still here. Multifaceted and diverse. A place where anyone can shill, be called on it, be bitched about this place on other boards and bitch about those bitching. What entertainment. And it doesn't cost you a penny, just your time.

But it is sad when other sites don't support the entire community out of what can only be seen as competition or perhaps jealousy.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

DAME - under 'content' on the left click 'columns' - Rob is listed there first, and there's a link to his blog site.

I am very torn on this subject... I post on and love both boards being discussed. I met so many good friends through the other site that I would not want to leave there. However I have on occasion been treated quite badly, being banned for two days for asking why a post was deleted for example, so can understand everything that Rob says here.

On this occasion they should be ashamed for removing the posting being discussed and in my heart I really hope they already know that.

Eddie, as nice a thought as Rob for prez might be, don't you think he would pull from Kerry's support base? And I'm thinking he might need every vote he can get.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

Just my own two cents to musicalsFan:

I believe, if you re-read Rob's blog, you will see that he's not condemning "Playbill.com"...just the opposite...he's including them with BWW. As far as "If I had a website with 40,000+ hits a day I wouldn't feel the need to go posting on other sites and feeling upset when your post get deleted. Just do your thing and let them do theirs." - this is where Rob clearly establishes himself as a non-selfish member of the Broadway Community (when he certainly could be, given the success of this website)lamenting that this other site misses the distinction between support of theater and the selfish support only of one's website. Kudos Rob, you expressed yourself and your true loyalties quite well. That's why you have my support on this issue.
