Saw the Piazza matinee on Saturday and WOW. Thank god for Adam Guettel. This has restored my faith in American Musical Theatre.

Not until I read Frank Rich's intro. in the cd notes did I realize that Guettel's grandfather was Richard Rogers, and Sondheim was his mentor.

I definitely hear influences- the Piazza overture has hints of Carousel, and Fable certainly sounds of Into the Woods.

Anyone hear anything else?

It's Richard Rodgers. There's a "D" just so they don't kill you.

I think I mentioned this on some other thread, but when I heard a guy in class last week singing the song "Take the Moment" from Do I Hear a Waltz?...I could definitely hear resemblances to some of Mr. Guettel's music in Piazza, so I think there's an influence on the part of Sondheim and Rodgers. But it's all good - they're three of the greatest composers of our time.

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Since DO I HEAR A WALTZ, the one Rodgers/Sondheim collaboration was set in Italy, it wold be virtually impossible for Guettel to NOT be influenced by it!
