Roma Torre on NY 1 just said that Bebe Neuwirth will be the first actress to play both Velma AND Roxie. Oh, Roma...do your homework! Ruthie Henshall, Nancy Hess and Chita Rivera have all had that honor. Did I leave anyone out? I know Amy Spanger covered both roles at one point but I don't know if she ever went on as Velma.

I heard Ruthie was fantastic in both roles.

I saw Nancy Hess as Velma, and thought she was, for lack of a better word, a disaster. I assume she was probably better as Roxie. However, her Velma lacked any sort of presence and "oomph."

She meant in the Broadway Revival. Ruthie only played Velma in the Revival. Nancy Hess and Amy Spanger covered both roles, but Amy only played Roxie full-time, and Nancy only played Velma full time. Many women have covered both roles, but Bebe will be the first to star as both in the Broadway Revival.

I was listening pretty closely and didn't hear her say that bebe would be the first roxie/velma in the revival. Even though Nancy Hess never played Roxie full-time she did go on more than 100 times. Please don't burst my bubble - I love pointing out Roma's mistakes :)

I think Bebe IS the first person to play both roles on Broadway.
Ruthie did both roles in the Westend, so did Anita Louise Combe & Rachel Stanley
