Posted: 11/29/06 at 7:51pmIt's most likely the play that inspired the Hitchcock film of the same name. The film is amazing because it almost looks like one long cut. It's also controversial because it subliminally displayed a homosexual relationship between the two main characters.

Can anyone tell me a little about the major femail characters?
Done some digging, and I found the playwrights listed as David Wallace and T. S. Stribling...is that the play you were talking about?

The play and film are fairly similar in terms of the characters, though with a lot of different dialogue.
But that play was written by Patrick Hamilton, so this may be a new play.

By Patrick Hamilton, the same man who wrote "Angel Street" which was filmed as "Gaslight"
As it's about seventy years old, you might have a hard time finding it at your local library.
You can order a copy of it from Samuel French.

I love Rope. It is one of my favorites. The Hitchcock movie is excellent and I really enjoyed the Off-Broadway production last year. It isn't really a mystery though. We "see" the murder in the very first scene and know right from the start who committed it.
Not too many memorable female characters. It kinda revolves around the murdering friends and their own school teacher. Good play.

I did this show several years ago. It's a great piece, but a very long night at the theater (3 acts, lots of dialogue). The basic plot is two students decide to murder a friend of theirs and hide the body in a steamer trunk in their living room. They then invite a relative of the dead boy, a few friends, and their old professor over for the evening. Through the course of the play, they drop clues about what they've done and the suspense is wondering if they're going to get caught.
As for the female characters there are two. One is an older woman who is either a relative of the dead boy or a friend of someone who is. Very stuffy, not much to do. The other girl is younger and is, I think, an aspiring actress. In any event, she's very much the ditzy blonde and tends to get more laughs. The show is really a vehicle for the two murderers and their teacher.
Hope that helps.
