i absolutely loved Bernadette's performance of Rose's Turn on the Tony Awards
(how amazing that she even had to learn and perform a new abbreviated version of the number for the broadcast! and still delivered a goosebump enducing performance)
...on the broadcast there was no flashing
Roooooooooossssssssseeeeeeeee
behind Rose at the end of Rose's turn.
Is this the way it is done in the new production? Have they removed the flashing Rose as the end of Rose's Turn???
thanks folks:)

I'll answer this too. It's a bit of a spoiler for those who don't want to know . . .
SPOILER
The show's set is an empty theatre. Drops and pieces are brought in and out, (vaudeville style) but throughout, there
is a brick wall in back and a moving steel door that says "SILENCE". The wall stays in place all night until, "This time boys I'm taking the bows." At that point, the whole back wall lifts away, and a slew of neon marquees light up in all different styles and colors.
If you want to get a little sense of what they look like, go to the show's website: www.gypsythemusical.com A montage of photos comes up during the flash portion when you sign in. The center photo has some of the Rose marquees in the background.

Posted: 7/15/03 at 8:47pmHas anyone ever heard Betty Buckley's verson of "Rose's Turn." The way she characterizes the song, it sounds like her Rose is country twang. She has a country tone to her voice. Was it always like that or did she just do it for the role?>

Posted: 7/16/03 at 1:51pmI loved Bernadette as Rose in GYPSY and I think it's a fine underrated production. I loved Bernadette's Rose's Turn on the Tonys. I wish it had been done the same way at the Shubert. I know there are traditionally marquees that light up behind her during the last section of the song. I found just the lights getting tighter and brighter as on the Tonys was much more effective. I think the signs are too much and overkill in the current production. They distracted me from Bernadette at a key moment. She, and the show, doesn't need them.
