Rounding Third

Few days ago at the Vineyard Playhouse on Martha's Vineyard, MA (which has held performances by Amy Brenneman, Dianne Wiest, Mia Farrow and Spalding Gray), I saw the play, "Rounding Third" by Richard Dresser. The show starred John M. Jackson ("JAG") and Tim Ryan ("China Beach"), and they were excellent as two odd-couple type little league baseball coaches, one of whom took the game all too seriously. Having come from the town where the show is loosely based off of, the scenario were at times familiar: the towny vs. the yuppie. The play was well written, I thought, flawed, but enjoyable, and Munafo's direction fit well. It's really a two man show in which they used the audience, at times, as the kids in the game (no speaking participation required). It was also the same set the whole time--a home base, a bench, surrounded by fence, a green carpet, and a two-sided shed to the right. The lighting changed though, of course, where the focus ( it's a tiny, tiny stage) was on one part of the set. The show seems to be travelling to many locations --opened in Chicago of 2003, then off-Broadway in NYC, The Old Globe in San Diego, and now at the MV Playhouse. An enjoyable night, you might wanna check it out when it comes to a closer area.
