Ok, so, taking a break from Tony chatter, I've been collecting/listening to the RNT recordings of "South Pacific," "Oklahoma!," "My Fair Lady," and "Candide" as of late.
I know they also recorded "Carousel" (I don't like the Billy, so I rarely listen) and "A Little Night Music." Are there any others?

Posted: 5/5/09 at 10:41pmThe first one, or at least the first noteworthy one, was the 1982 "Guys and Dolls" with Ian Charleson, Julia McKenzie, Bob Hoskins and Julie Covington. What a cast, right? But I expect it's hard to find.

If buying used be sure to avoid the first CD edition (Chrysalis CCDD 1388 ) as it puts all the songs togteher into one long track.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

There's also the 1994 recording of Lady in the Dark with Maria Friedman and James Dreyfuss (who picked up an Olivier).
The National didn't do many musicals in the 80s: after Guys and Dolls, Marvin Hamlisch's Jean Seberg flopped and was not commercially recorded. Nor was their 1990 original London production of Sunday in the Park with George (Maria Friedman and Philip Quast). The 1994 National production of Sweeney Todd was broadcast on BBC radio but not commercially released.
