I don't care to ever see Ruben onstage. He never did one performance on AI that blew me away. Now, just thinking of Clay's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" gives me chills.

I'm sick and tired of the unwritten rule that you can't mention someone's fat. Give me a break. I doubt if Ruben will have any career whatsoever if he doesn't lose weight. He's well into the morbidly obese category, and if you didn't notice him panting for air and not being able to even walk a step very well, then you're fooling yourself. He won't live much longer unless he does something about it.

According to the Rolling Stone article (long time subscriber often shocked by who appears on the cover, but I read the stories anyway) everybody around Ruben is concerned about his health. But his Mom says Ruben won't make a change until he's ready to, and she's right. And she's very worried. I'm sure that his label knows that the only thing that sells more records that the pop star of the moment is a dead pop star of an earlier moment.

Correction: that wasn't Clay's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." That was Clay doing an impersonation of George Michael's impersonation of Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me."

I've heard that Ruben is trying to lose weight. It's even more difficult for him now with "all eyes watching him". He feels like he lets people down and so he eats.
We've had lots of discussions on this board about people in the public eye and how what they eat or don't eat can send out a bad message to their fans.
Can't we cut Ruben some slack? At least he admits he has a problem.

I'm assuming the Rolling Stone interview happened very recently, since it details the reactions of the fans on the American Idol tour. Here's the interesting factoid that you young fans may be shocked to hear. MOST of the people in the audience on the AI tour are women between the ages of 30 and 50 years old! That's why it's sorta shocking to see the AI contestants discussed here seriously by people, it turns out, who should be young enough to know how square the contest and its contestants are! Anyhoo, the food issue comes up in the interview and Ruben poo-poos any concerns about his weight with a "That's just Ruben, dawg," and makes no effort to say he has any plans to change his habits. He is what he is, he says. And that's what worries his mama.

As for cutting Ruben some slack-he can have all the slack he wants. We aren't talking about his personality. He's most likely a wonderful person to know. The discussion is about his viability on broadway, and I believe the points we are making concern his talent and health. The ability to perform has much
to do with having the stamina and energy.

People should be happy and healthy however they are shaped. And I happen to find all KINDS of body types beautiful. It's really more about the individual person than what body type they are. Some big people are beautiful, some are not. Many scrawny types are repulsive (to me), occasionally some have nice eyes or something. So, that's all personal taste. I'm sorry to see a lot of people have taste that is strongly influenced by marketing, but it's a sign of the times.

This is a very sensitive topic for many people, and I'm sorry I got involved in it. I have my own story and opinions on it, especially since I was a little overweight for a good many years, and now am proud to have conquered the problem. If there are those who do believe that excess fat is beautiful, I really do respect their opinions. Therefore, I'll just say enjoy it, and I'm happy to live and let live. I don't like arguing on a message board. Peace.

Well, well, well. At least we now have a balance. When certain people get tired of trashing Juliana for her eating habits /being so slim, we can now switch gears and see them trash Rubin for being overweight and his eating habits. It’s so nice to watch equal opportunity offenders at work.

My main objection to Reuben being on Broadway has little to do with his size or even the fact that he sweats a lots. It's his voice, which to my ears consists of a lot of mannered vocval frippery and very litle DIRECT, CLEAR singing. What's being sung has become far less important than vocal acrobatics, and theatre singing DEMANDS that the message of the song being sent hurling across the footlights. I can't see that in Reuben. Certainly he is not the only one guilty of such OVERemotional vocal masturbation. Among the guilty are Barbra (who actually used to hold those tendencies in check) and Whitney Houston (the worst offender, IMHO). A few months ago there was a brilliant critical article in the NY TIMES about the prevelance of this method of singing...Anyone else remember it?
