I'm heading to New York in June and the two shows I want to see are RENT and Wicked, both of which I have heard have lottery rush and the tickets are in the front 2 rows...
My questions are...did other shows start the "rush" policy after RENT? And what exactly is SRO?
Yes, RENT was first and then other companies adopted policies.
SRO means standing room only. Some shows offer a limited number of standing room tickets, normally in the back of the orchestra section, on days that the show is sold out. Hairspray has this policy, as does The Producers. For both shows, it's an awesome optioni if you're willing to get up to the box office early.

so you really have to stand through-out the whole show?
Unless someone gets up and you can take their seat for the second half. I got SRO when Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick did their second run of The Producers, and two guy sitting right in front of where I was standing left at intermission, so my friend and I took their seats.

oh I see.
I also heard a lot of people come out to do the lottery for Wicked and RENT. Is this true? Are there better days to go on?

thank you. I'll see what I can do. I wish they had a line, that way I could save money and sleep on the sidewalk AND get my front row tickets.
The lotteries are great. Also, look into student policies. I'm assuming that you are a student.

Check at playbill.com they have a listing of rush and student tickets, but it hasn't been updated since dec 15th. Check before your trip they usally updated it every so often.
