Saw the pre Broadway SPAMELOT last night. While the whole cast is having a blast on stage, and it seems like it's one HUGE production number after another... I have to say the show for me was really Sara Ramirez!!! The girl can sing and she's hysterical!!!! The show really has an ensemble feel. While it's obvious that there are stars on stage like Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce, and Hank Azaria, the other men who share the stage with them, like Christohper Seiber and Christian Borle, seem right at home playing together. But as the only featured woman and singing a majority of the new music. Sara is really a stand out! Sara's "Find Your Grail" and "The Cow Song" will be worth buying the CD when it comes out. Would you say Sara would likely fall in the Best Leading Actress categories around award season? Or would she be more of a supporting actress?

I would have to say Leading Actress and from the buzz in the audience and the reaction of everyone I've talked to who's seen it I'd say she is the front runner for the Tony.

Wow..interesting.
A lot of the Buzz i've been hearing is surrounding Victoria Clark in "Light in the Piazza."

I'm pretty sure Ramirez will be featured and it will be between Victoria Clark, Sutton Foster, Christina Applegate and Joanna Gleason for lead (with Clark being the front-runner).

Joanna Gleason is a featured player in Scoundrels, is she not?

Yes, but she's Joanna Gleason...

Will any of the "Chitty Chitty" players be considered in the leading categories? Also -- Jenn Gambatese could be considered for Leading Actress (although I dont see All Shook Up getting any acting nods, really...who knows). Kate Reinders very well may end up with a nod for Good Vibrations, although I think she'd be considered featured as well.

Having just seen Sutton Foster in a role she was born to play... she'll be very hard to beat.

Exactly. She's Joanna Gleason so she'll be billed above the title and thus considered for lead for the Tonys. I suppose Erin Dilly and Jan Maxwell will both be featured for Chitty, but we'll see. Gambatese and Reinders may both be eligible for lead (and one may nab one of the five nominations) but I doubt either has much of a shot at the award.

margo- you're half right, she is billed above the title on the marquee but so are john lithgow, norbert leo butz, sherie renee scott...so i guess as in the case of joel grey's billing in wicked she and jbara will be considered featured

I would say perfect for Best Featured Actress. I think that she does quite a bit in the show but it's a "featured" role if you saw it.

Oh also also saw LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA last year at The Goodman and loved it! I think that the Leading Actress category will be between Sutton Foster and Victoria Clark. Clark is AMAZING in PIAZZA. I've always enjoyed her work...but she is a power house in the show. I love Sutton's work as well... but Clark is sounding better than ever as the mother and I think that the role might end up being a sentimental favorite with audiences.

I agree that Sara Ramirez is fabulous in the show. "The Diva's Lament" had me in stitches. I hope she wins something for her role.

(Also, can I be nitpicky about one thing? It's Spam*a*lot, not Spam*e*lot :))

Based on her billing, she's "featured". It may be the only major female role in the show, but, like Ulla in THE PRODUCERS, it's not a lead role.

It's a MUCH better part than Ulla, though!

You saw it last night?!?!?!?! So did I!

OK, to be quite honest with you, I think Sara Ramirez is somewhat overrated. I mean, she was great. Perfect in her role. I would be thrilled if she got a nomination, and really hopes she does. I wouldn't have a problem with it if she won- I'd be happy for her. She had her great moments for sure- LOVED "Find Your Grail" and "The Diva's Lament". LOVED THEM. Showstoppers, and like someone said, make it worth buying the cast album. But I don't think that she really was the whole show, as many people are saying. I mean, yeah, she was good. She was GREAT! But I don't think she was the best part of the show. *shrug* At least, she wasn't my favorite part of the show. I personally loved Christian Borle. Now, he was HILARIOUS!

I guess I just don't see what the big deal about Sara Ramirez is (it puzzled my dad too, though he's not a theater person at all). Maybe I'm crazy...

But now we have come almost to the end. One last step. And then, when I take power, they will be pulled down and ground into dirt for what they did to you. And what they did in so contemptuously underestimating me.

WhereAmI, I think Christian Borle is definitely overlooked in Spamalot. I didn't know he was in the show until a couple days before I went. I knew him vaguely but was fairly ambivalent about him, but I came out LOVING him (as did the friend I brought with me). He was great in every scene he was in, and Prince Herbet? So. funny. (I also loved him in "I'm Not Dead Yet"). So you're not alone in loving Christian in the show!
