I'll always remember my first time seeing the show. It was the touring production. It came through Kansas City in the early ninties and the show had sold out its two weeks very quickly. The theater holds 2400 seats, so not a puny theater by any means, especially for the area. They extended it a week, which included my birthday; obviously, I needed to give myself a wonderful birthday gift. So I bought a ticket and was about 5 rows back and slightly to the side (at the Music Hall, that would be Row E, Right center orchestra). Not quite under the chandelier, but close enough to really get to experience it.
Now, the wild thing was, there was a big problem initially before they booked the show to come to town. They were not sure that the ceiling/roof of the Music Hall could handle the weight of the chandelier. Engineers came into town, did all kinds of studies and said, "Yes, it will be okay." Now, this made the show even more exciting! In the back of your mind, you were thinking "Damn, I hope those engineers were right." There was definitely the thought that life could quickly imitate art.
The show was wonderful! I can't recall who any of the actors were anymore, but I was spellbound the entire show. While the I don't think the chandelier dropped near as fast as the production I just recently saw in London, it was still quite a thrill to experience. I've only got to see the show a couple of times, but would love to see it many many more!
Congratulations to POTO and everyone involved with the show!

my first time was in miami florida...teri bibb was christine..she was the most amazing thing about the show...the next three times i suffered through the show was at the majestic theater...i will not name the christine's i saw but i have not liked any of them. (one of them was a friend!! she was awful!) teri ruined me. i never saw lisa vroman as christine..but she is amazing so i have no doubt she was amazing as christine! speaking of first times..the first time i tried sushi i was sitting with lisa vroman! if it weren't for her, i never would have even known how much i love sushi! LOL!!
ps..why did i go back and see the show so many times when i really didn't love it? because i either had a friend in the show or a friend visiting me in NYC who wanted to see it.
its not the worst show BY FAR...i enjoyed it..but its not my fave! i am excited that the show has run so long! i am just bitter cause i was never christine! hahahahah!!!

Posted: 1/8/06 at 2:11amMy first time seeing Phantom was in Toronto in 1995. My dad and I took a vacation there and I almost had a heart attack when that curtain came off. Also I would like to share even though it wasn't the musical. My boyfriend asked me to marry him after we saw the movie on opening night so Phantom will always have a special place in my heart.

First time I saw Phantom was in August of 1995 in San Francisco. We ended up with the understudy Phantom, Andre, Raoul and alternate Christine. What a combination. But it was a wonderful performance. I never got to see that Raoul again, though I did see Joseph Dellger and Cristin Mortenson another time. I wish I could remember specifics, but Joseph Dellger was a very imposing Phantom.
P.S. It was also the first Equity show I'd ever seen, after having seen a lot of regional theatre, starting with Annie when I was 7. :)
