SILK STOCKINGS - Toronto premiere

The 1955 Cole Porter musical comedy (his last for Braodway) has apparently never been staged in Toronto befoire, but tonight The Civic Light Opera Company will open their production at Fairview Library Theatre.

The show was a moderate hit, it ran a little overa year and made a profit, helped by the sale of the movie rights. The 1957 M-g-M film version is a minor classic with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse dancing their way through it.

I'm just posting this to alert those of you in the area who have a fondness for '50s musicals.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

re: SILK STOCKINGS - Toronto premiere

I saw the show. Yes, it's a little dated, and it seemed to take forever to get to the first song. But it was still fun. Great to hear some Cole Porter songs onstage. The three leads did well in their roles and the Russian agents were not overdrawn as caricatures. I am really looking forward to A Class Act coming up in the Spring. Also the Richard Rodgers-Sheldon Harnick musical "Rex" nest season. This is a great theatre group with a wonderful company of actors who treat their shows with respect and mount them with care and attention.
