SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD - Help

We are tossing the idea of doing this show around at my college. I have the cd and enjoy it quite a bit. I was looking at MTI website and it says that the show has two acts. What is there to the show? Is there a book? Is there alot more music in the actual show than what was recorded? Any information from those who have seen this performed or those who have worked on this show would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
- Eric

As far as I know, Songs for a New World is more a revue than anything. There is no book, only music. And it's just the music that you hear on the CD, there's nothing else.

Thanks Mattio - that's what I thought. I was just thrown a little when I saw that there were two acts. I thought there might be a little bit more to the show though. Thanks again for your help.

re: SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD - Help

There are a few pieces of music that have not been recorded that are in the score. They are mainly incidental pieces that are different arrangements of the opening number performed by one or more of the cast members. The final one before Hear My Song is actually one of my favorite pieces of music from the show. It builds perfectly right into Hear my Song with four part harmony on "you're suddenly a stranger." Great stuff.
The show was put together as a showcase for Jason Robert Brown's music by Daisy Prince. But, as they were assembling it, they began to realize that themes linked a lot of the songs. So they put them in an order that constitutes somewhat of an emotional arc, and then Jason wrote the opening and closing numbers to bookend it. This show has some of the best music written for musical theatre in the last decade in it. Do it if you can BUT make sure that your four leads are both great soloists AND blend well since a lot of the harmonies are incredibly tight and difficult. So difficult in fact that there are a few chords that the original cast didn't even get right on the album. re: SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD - Help
Word. Word, indeed.
