SPAMELOT is the Best Show Ever
re: SPAMELOT is the Best Show Ever#25
Posted: 9/14/04 at 6:54pmFinally, my first posting. Please be kind, but Monty Python (along with Mad Magazine) are crucial linchpins in the evolution of my sense of humor. While I can appreciate a big show, Holy Grail was a fantastic adolescent experience that I have been somewhat reluctant to revisit because of the possibility it will not live up to the memory. However, since my first NYC live show was Monty Python Live at City Center when I was in 8th grade and given the stellar pedigree of this show, I'm eagerly looking forward to Spamalot. My prediction last year that Boy from Oz would be a must-see came true so I'm hoping to strike gold again (although I never thought Mel Brooks would hit it big on Bway). When do tickets go on sale?

Then if you're "so sick" rockfenris2005 take your sorry @ss back to germany.
Actually, truth be told, I'd rather go everywhere. The musical universe is not JUST Broadway. As soon as people get their heads around that, the sooner musicals will be easier and accessible, and thus, allowed to flourish. With the critics in Broadway, those modern-day huns, it's not worth the pain and the misery of what that place is becoming. Everything everywhere else, including Germany, just seems to have a lot more open-stuff on offer, and the critics are kinder there too, and the audiences more tolerant. I know this is sounding racist toward your culture, but I have never believed in Broadway. I have always thought of theatre as 'theatre' - as taking place at anywhere, anytime, and succeeding on its own merits without a prestige. That's my principle argument and I want you to keep that in mind

actually, he's responding to Marquise...
rock, it's unfortunate that Broadway is considered what it is... i understand what you're saying, and there is alot of good stuff not on Broadway, here in NY... just look at what's happening with the Musical Theater Festival... Broadway is more business than art now, unfortunately... i'd much rather spend my $100 on shows like Symphonie Fantastique and Bat Boy than what is being shoved down our throats here...

Posted: 10/5/04 at 3:09pmOk, I did a search on Spamalot and I cant find out what the show is about. All i know is that David Hyde Pierce is in it and it is a Monty Python movie. Those things alone are reasons enough to see the show, but I would like to know what it is about? Should I rent the movie to get an idea or is it completely changes around?

I hope to god we don't do to Spamalot what we've done to Wicked and Brooklyn. Well I couldn't care less about Brooklyn, but there was a time when a lot of us Wicked-bashers really enjoyed the show. But after months of being reminded by shill after shill just how wildly overrated it is, the love is just gone for a lot of people, no matter how hard we try to re-appreciate the 3-4 good songs on the recording.
Build up or crap on Brooklyn all you want, but Spamalot actually has a chance of being a good show, possibly made great by its cast. Good new musicals are rare and should be valued as such. It's what Jesus would do.

I don't know if it would hurt or help to rent MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL or not before seeing SPAMALOT. It might give away too many of the jokes.
However, there are some people who absolutely hate "British humor". I actually know folks who don't like Monty Python because they "can't understand the accents".
If you liked the humor in such movies as SHREK, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, the various Mel Brooks films, etc., you'd probably like Monty Python humor.

Posted: 10/5/04 at 7:46pmI thought Monty Python had a series of movies, I assumed Spamalot was one of them. Is it just a spin off of the Holy Grail? I'm confused..

Posted: 10/6/04 at 8:40amYes this is the stage version of The Holy Grail. Tim Curry is King Arthur, Hank Azarisa is Sir Lancelot, David Hyde Pierce is Sir Robin. Of course they each play many other roles as well. Eric Idle has done the adaptation and written new songs to go with the ones from the movie. And it's directed by Mike Nichols.
