SPRING AWAKENING

Saw Spring Awakening tonight (My neices wanted to see the show). Understudy Matt Doyle was on as Melchior. His voice was incredible and the 3 girls I took thought he was "dreamy." (Ah, youth.) He was fantastic. The Moritz (Gerard Canonico) was pretty good, but was pushing it a bit. His suicide, however, was really powerful. The rest of the company was really, REALLY bad. The kid playing the piano couldn't play and the rest of the ensemble lacked any ability to stay focused in the characters. I first saw the show shortly after it opened and really loved it. I was sadly disappointed in tonight's performance with the exception of Mr. Doyle and Mr Canonico.

Doyle and Swenson are splitting the role of Melchior until Hunter Parrish arrives. Anyway, with Doyle on as Melchior tonight, who went on as Hanschen? Jesse Swenson?

Yes, the slip in my program stated Swenson as playing the role of Hanschen tonight. Seemed like he was playing for laughs rather than playing the urgency, thrill, danger of the situation(s) that he was in. Much weaker actor than the original.
