Sweet Charity
Last night, my overly-critical sister and I saw Christina Applegate in Sweet Charity. We were both very pleased! Of course, her vocals were not the highest quality vocals we had ever heard, but we didn't expect her voice to blow us away. At first, we both thought, "Oh, her voice is pretty good!" Then, when Nickie and Helene began to sing, we realized that Charity's voice lacked.
Despite her voice, Christina's comedic timing and dancing made up for it. She had us rolling in the aisles throughout the show with her inflections, mannerisms and facial expressions.
Denis O'Hare and Kyra DaCosta were two big standouts for us. They had us laughing hysterically throughout the performance. Kyra's powerhouse voice also astounded us.
We both were quickly tired of and a bit annoyed by "Rich Man's Frug." Perhaps we missed something, but we didn't understand the boxing references in the choreography and it seemed so incredibly long.
I didn't mind the costumes, but my sister, who does costume designing, thought that the ladies' dresses were atrocious. I thought they were kind of ugly, but I didn't think they were that bad.
Overall, we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. It was a nice, sugary show to see and we would recommend it to others! Sorry for such a lackluster "review"!
Hairspray
I've written a review about Hairspray before and this review is pretty much the same as last time. I had $20 SRO tickets, just to see Marissa Jaret Winokur. I'm so glad I went. I know that I frequently ragged on Marissa for her ridiculously whiny voice, but I think she made it whinier for the cast recording. She was more than bearable in person; she was excellent! I can see why she won the Tony.
Gretchen Bieber, from the tour, went on as Amber for the first time on Broadway. She had me cracking up!
Donna Vivino went on as Prudy, et al. I thought she was hilarious, but the rest of the audience wasn't so thrilled... at least they didn't show it in their laughter.
Blake Hammond went on as Wilbur Turnblad. Holy Lord, what a performer! He had incredible comedic timing and a phenomenal voice! I was so impressed with him. I liked him much better than Todd Susman.
And as usual, Barbara Walsh went underappreciated.
