Loved the film, but unlike the stage musical, was disappointed in Master of the House. It just seemed too over the top for me, a caricature straight out of a cartoon.
Ok, When he threw himself in the sh*t in the sewers, was all too over the top and Phyllis: Actors don't always do what the directors tells them too, wonder why they had to take a few weeks break in the middle of filming master of the house because of Cohen & also that dog eats dog was cut,a mess of a performance that Hooper did his best to work with

I think "Lovely Ladies" is supposed to be sad. I've always found it sad, though.

The thing that annoyed me most about Cohen's Thenardier was how blatantly obvious he was as he went about shafting people -- he was basically wrestling people to the floor to get at their wallets and belongings.
The Thenardiers could have been alot older & no one in their right mind would have allowed them into the wedding what with the way they were dolled up. Oops, I have talked about the couple rather than just the man. 'Master of the House' did seem to be one of the musical numbers that didn't translate to film as well as the other songs did. Just too manic, too much going on, & not enough subtlety to the thievery. I would have preferred a brighter more pretentious house, as well.
