Loretta Swit has never played Dolly.
I heard she was Good from some people...but I've never seen her do the role.
Here's a review from the Local Paper. Pretty glowing :)

Well, at least she did not fall off the cross like Jesus did 2 weeks before when the same theatre did "Superstar"! My friend, who happens to be Jewish, was there and said it might be the funniest thing he has ever seen in live theatre, then again, we are talking about a local production in the Midwest, but still,it makes me giggle to think about it. He said the cross began to sway and then Jesus fell and scampered off the stage. I will have to e-mail my friends to see if they went to Hello Dolly? Isn't Sally a little plump to play that particular role?
I just wonder if in Harmonia Gardens (isn't that right) she says, "Ya know, for the price of a cup of coffee..."

'Way back when the original production of SUPERSTAR was in previews (was it 1970?), Jesus was crucified on what seemed to be a box of Schraft's chocolates. It was a huge yellow triangle. It was located on the rear wall of the stage. When Jesus was pierced at the end, rays of lights streamed against the wall and seemed to eminate from Jesus' side. Then during the soothing music at the very end, the "cross" was slowly propelled from the back wall, over the orchestra and into the first few rows of the theater.
At the preview I attended, something went wrong with the propelling mechanism and the whole cross began to shimmy and shake while the actor playing Christ (Jeff Fenholt) held on for his dear life. As the cross passed the orchestra pit and was well over the heads of audience members, the shaking became even more obvious and Fenholt uttered some words that never appear in any of the four Gospels. Those of us who were under the cross feared for our safety. He was hanging there for what seemed to be 10 minutes and finally the cross was retracted and curtain calls were taken.
I saw the show several times after that the the cross was never propelled further than the orchestra after that.
That moving cross sounds impressive and pre-dates that old trick with the chandelier by decades.

Sally Strauthers has only been in one good thing - and that was the Forbidden Broadway "Grease" parody she got sent up in! LOL
This is scary..I heard the same thing about their recent horrid production of JCS.
Apparently, from an associate of mine, the theater has made the HUGE mistake this year in hiring dancers over singer/actors.

There's nothing that indicates that Dolly must be thin.
I saw this in Minneapolis at the Bloomington Civic Theater. I went in wondering what I had gotten into, and I thought she was terrific, not dreadful. She did a great job, and her singing was much better than I expected. Ok, no Carol Channing, but it was very good.
