No question that Hugh Jackman could sing it, but given that Sweeney Todd is supposed to have been away in a prison in Botany Bay for 15 years in Botany Bay and is in the opinion of Mrs. Lovett, "so changed"... isn't Hugh Jackman just a little too robust?

NuggetsMonkeys said that Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth would have "bursted through the silver screen." YAK! I hated, Hated, HATED Ann Reinking as Roxie. When listening to the recording and she starts to sing "Nowadays" I scream and run far, far, away. Sure, she's a great dancer and singer and she was close to Fosse, but give me Renee Zellweger anyday over Ann, though she was a good Grace in the Annie movie.

Hugh Jackman a little too robust ?
I guess you guys are not Wolverine fans -- Wolverine ( aka Hugh J) came back after many years from an unidentified place somewhere -- and came back a much changed man ( bitter, trusting no one, cynical, etc)-
- just kidding 
I have seen Mr.Jackman in a little known film (for which he won an Australian academy award) called ERSKINEVILLE KINGS - a one-act play type heavy drama -- and his performance shows that he is indeed a very fine dramatic actor. He is the type who can be made to age with makeup and whose acting talent can handle the histrionic requirements for a Sweeney Todd, perhaps.

Let's hope that BK is right and that Mr. Mendes is NOT going to direct SWEENY TODD. Sorry, but he just doesn't have the stuff to direct musicals. "Road to Perdition" was simply a road to petrification, so what that violence is all that has in common with SWEENY. Lets get Mr. Mendes on the highly overrated list quick!! That's Hollywood for you, no holly and all wood.

Mendes is a good director, on and off stage. He has what it takes to direct a musical.
