San Francisco Parking Question

So I have never had my own vehicle when driving to San Francisco before, I either took the train or got a ride with family. And since I never drove, I never paid too much attention. Isn't it that on weekends, you can park and you don't have to move your car every two hours, and weekdays you can park and leave it after 5 or 6pm? And if so, is this in all areas? I know it's like this in my family's part of the city (give or take a few hours for the time, I can't remember what it was), but is it this way downtown by the theatres also?

Basically, when I come down on weekends, am I going to be able to park somewhere on the street for several hours without moving the car (granted, I know it will be hell to find a spot)? And then if I come on a weekday after 6pm, can I just park anywhere also and not worry? I am really trying to avoid the fees from the garages, but I don't want a parking violation either.

Thanks for the help!

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Well I live in Sacramento, so driving is pretty much the only option...

And I know about the garages... I am kind of looking to not spend an additional 15 bucks.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

You also have the option of driving to a Bart station, parking there and taking the train in the rest of way in from Sacramento. During the week it's just a pain and you are better off with a garage, bus or Bart. You'd spend almost an hour or more just trying to find anything within walking distance downtown. The week-end, depending on what part of town you are going to, determines how easy it is to find a parking place on the street? If you come in on the week-ends before 10 am, it's not too bad. You only have to move your car during the week if you park in a commuter lane but those are most of downtown. Use the garage rather than risk getting a very large parking ticket if you must be close to something downtown.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

The last I heard it was free street parking, Saturday after 6pm and all day Sunday, unless the sign says differently.
As for downtown parking, if you don't mind parking 4 to 5 blocks away going towards Van Ness, you could find street parking near Union Square. You probably will have to circle the block a few times and then end up parking on a hill. But if you must park on a Saturday, there used to be a little garage on Geary Street, left hand side once you pass the Curran and the Hotel Monaco. It was in a little alley way and used to be reasonable priced for all day parking.
But your best bet would be to park at BART somewhere along whichever highway you're driving on. It's free to park at BART and then you just pay for your ticket. Or park where you're parents live, and take muni downtown.
Good luck.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Thanks everyone.

I am coming Wednesday for the night, and it looks like if I do BART, I'd get on at the MacArthur Station. So there's free parking there for sure, right?

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Most of the time when I get to SF from Sacto I park at the MacArthur station. You don't need to deal with the bay bridge. You take I-80, 680 and Hwy 24, that's the least congested route.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Um, well since I am driving from Sacramento and taking I-80, Oakland makes the most sense. That stop is the closest to the city before the Bay Bridge.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Okay. Just watch out that late at night in the MacArthur station!

My old boss would not allow me take the BART home at night even though that was the closest station.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

MacArthur is really not that bad. It's West Oakland you have to worry about!

re: San Francisco Parking Question

I prefer Pleasant Hill or Lafayette Bart Stations if I'm going to my car late at night along I-80. Lafayette is probably a little bit easier right now since they have been doing some construction around Pleasant Hill but it is still a good location. I think MacArthur is better than West Oakland and the Berkeley stops just because of traffic. Walnut Creek is fine too? There has been some trouble at the MacArthur Station just because it is big and a lot of escape routes. Unless they have added more fencing since I have used that station? It's just a worry if it is late at night and you are alone that it would make me a little concerned about that station. Even the Richmond Station isn't bad and well lit. Since it feeds all of Marin/Sonoma Co., buses are running regularly and at night, except for cabbies, it isn't crowded. So it depends on how much you want to drive?

I know Muni can be a pain if your route happens to be in a construction zone or if you lack a more direct route to the show. People dress more casually now for a show it seems these days so that might make taking a bus a little more bearable if you don't have to dress up well? It isn't that bad.

I hope you have a good time. I have to bear the GG Transit and leaving the City it has a terrible location and I have to leave before midnight or I am stuck. I don't mind taking the GG Transit but having to leave the City so early when everything isn't convenient to the Theatre makes it less attractive to me.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Thanks. I will be with someone at the station. So I think I'll be okay.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Sorry.

It's just that two of my friends got mugged there when they were coming back from San Francisco last week.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

No, thanks for telling me. It's good to know, and I appreciate knowing which stations I'd want to be careful around.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Pleasant Hill is going through A TON of construction right now. It's pretty much a mess. If you were looking to park in that area, I'd recommend the Lafayette or Walnut Creek stations instead.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Just for clarification, West Oakland is the closest BART station before crossing the Bay Bridge. I'd park there before I would ever park at MacArthur. There is just too much police activity there for me. Though I always used to park at Walnut Creek when I was driving from Fairfield.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Rowlin. West Oakland is probably the closest stop to the Bay Bridge. But, if you're coming from Sacto, the closest BART station with decent parking that's closest to I-80 is probably El Cerrito Plaza. Either way, at both El Cerrito or MacArthur parking is $1 a day. Make sure you memorize your stall number and when you get into the station you have to pay and then punch your stall number into the little machine *inside* the gates. So you have to get a BART ticket in the machine outside of the gates and then pay the dollar again in the other machine inside the gates.

re: San Francisco Parking Question

Well, the only problem with the West Oakland station is that it still is a lot sketchier than MacArthur.

So if you're deeply paranoid, I wouldn't go there.
