Sarah Brightman to sing Beijing Olympic theme song

Just a quick note as the countdown to the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony takes place - Sarah Brightman is to be singing the theme song at the closure of the ceremony with Liu Huan. From her official website:

"We are very pleased we can finally announce that Sarah, together with the Chinese singer Liu Huan, will be singing the official theme song of the 2008 Beijing Olympics!

Nearly 100,000 people will watch the opening ceremony in the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium, with billions more expected to tune in worldwide for the extravaganza.

The song, whose identity has been carefully kept secret via its omission from all three of the opening-ceremony rehearsals, will be revealed at the conclusion of the ceremony, which commences at 8pm Beijing time Friday, Aug 8, 2008.

Needless to say, this is a tremendous honor, and we are thrilled that Sarah will once again be singing the theme song to the Olympic Games! Many of you already know that she also sung the theme song, "Amigos para Siempre" at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games with Jose Carreras, to a global audience of 2 billion.

I was already excited for the Opening Ceremonies/Olypics in general and this just made it allllll the more happy for me

Well, that was...interesting... Sarah Brightman squeeking in Cantonese (or Mandarin, I can't remember which it was. It rather spoilt the ceremony

I just watched it, she was alright.

I imagine they chose her because of the way her voice is, it lent itself well to a Chinese style of singing.

Couldn't quite work out for a while if she was singing in Mandarin or just unclear English, but the effect was good.

On a side note, that Ceremony was the most stunning thing I have ever seen. We shall see if the London Opening Ceremony holds a candle (or torch) to that...I doubt it will, but all the same I'm excited for it!

Just finished the Opening Ceremony! It's a great opening, good for China! Go Beijing! I guess they chose Sarah Brightman because she's quite famous in China. And for the after-performance, they ahve Jackie Chan & Karen Mok to perform who are big Hollywood actor and a famous pop singer in SE Asia (from Hong Kong) and also played Mimi in RENT Tour.

I thought she sounded amazing!! I couldnt understand a work she was saying but it didnt matter..... she sounded like an angel!!

It's appropriate. If Hello Kitty could sing (Hell, if Hello Kitty HAD A MOUTH) Brightman's voice is what I imagine it would sound like.

i love the song and thought it was beautifully done - not overdone just simple and pretty.
