Yes I caught the matinee performance of Gypsy today - bought the tickets the week they announced the closing.
What can I saw, I had 3 months since the last performance I saw, and I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I was to see Bernadette Peters on that stage again. Not only that, I had an aisle seat in the orchastra section and caught the famous "Sing Out Louise" entrance - she walked passed my aisle! Though I could tell she was coming because I heard her walking, and of course I knew the timing of her "entrance." I didn't turn around but really wanted to!!
What shocked me was that I was one of 7 people who applauded her entrance! I couldn't believe it - this was the first time I didn't hear the applause.
Her opening number "Some People" was superb. Just spectacular. That was the indication to me that she gave a great start.
My favorite number "Small World" is just the highlight of the show for me. Just my favorite number - I love it.
When they sing it during the show together, it sounds different than the cd recording. How I wish I could have the live musical's version...it weakens my knees that's how much I love it. And Rose's Turn at the end....so powerful. Gets it right everytime.
Tulsa and June had their understudies and I hate to admit they just didn't fit the role well. David Burtka is just unbelievable in the role and I wish he had been there....I really like Kate Reinders in the role and disappointed, too, that she wasn't there.
Baby June & Louise are still the greatest...though in a very short time they are really going to be towering over Bernadette Peters! They've become so tall!
Michael McCormick who plays U. Jocko/Cigar left such an impression! I love his Cigar character and the way he plays it. He's also J. Dossett's understudy - must be goood in it too, I'd love to see him playing Herbie.
John Dossett is still the best. Though the new "Miss Cratchitt/Electra" didn't impress me at all. And of course Tammy is just unbelievable in the role and has improved tremendously. Loved it. And it was just very comedic timing during "Little Lamb;" the lamb actually licked Tammy in the mouth while she was singing!! Everyone laughed!
It is quite obvious that Bernadette Peters gets enormously emotional with this role, and many have given her a negative reaction to that. I understood today that I think that's how she chose to portray her character. There were times, particularly during "Everything's Coming..." and Rose's Turn, or when she and Herbie fight just before he leaves her, you hear the enormous strain in her voice, sort of a tremble, heavy breathing, yelling, etc. I think she does that deliberatly because she wants to show the character's passion and anger. She has enormous control over her character. All the numbers projected her incredible voice and I didn't hear any difficulty in her singing. With all honesty, she sang like a pro.
Anyway, I just wanted to post my feelings. I love the show and always will. And I loved Bernadette in the show.
And I hope to see it again in 3 months!
