Hey, I'm letting everyone know that i just saw the LA production of Caroline or Change, and it was just as brilliant and magnificant as it was in New York. Some different things (minor changes or small disappointments) - i saw the understudy for Veanne Cox, which was sorta refreshing because this woman had a much better voice but i realized that i missed Veanne's amazing acting. There was a different woman playing Dottie, and this woman had one hell of a set of pipes, but yet again, the Broadway Dottie was a better actress. But this Dottie rocked my world. Anika Noni Rose (who i met after the show and shes the nicest person on the planet) was unbelievable, better than she was on Broadway. Sy Adamowsky (who played Noah) was completely annoying, but it wasn't so bad. He sang well, i guess. And finally Tonya. Tonya was, naturally, incredible. She always has been in the role. Her voice has also gotten better. But. She hasn't really risen above the difficult music. Instead, all of her music was muuuuuuch faster, and some of the melodies were changed so she could sing lower notes in the same chords. And all of this made the show lose its dramatic effect. For example, when she sang "flat" in lot's wife, the 4 flats were double time. I mean come on! oh well.... she didnt crack and scream at least. And she seemed like she wasn't putting her heart into the role anymore. Maybe it was a fluke. She was still amazing, though. The theater was cavernous and way too big for the show, but it was still and incredible show, and even though this production had a few shortcomings, i hope that lots and lots of people can experience this musical.
