I thought the POTO movie was opening in NYC on December 12th.

"I just realized something. Could th reason that Gerard sounds strange when he sing and like he has down syndrome or a speech impediment be because the Phantom is actually a deformed maybe mentally challenged character? Even if that wasn't his intent, could it still work that way? I think it's fine that the part is not sung operatically since it's not an opera."

Deformed, yes - that'd work (esp. if they went the whole hog with the latex & did his mouth as well). Mentally challenged - no way. The Phantom is warped, yes, but he is hardly mentally challenged. He's a genius. Not only musically, but mechanically as well. He is capable of some quite amazing mindplay & mechanical tricks. (Does anybody REALLY believe that he magically disappears? The whole essence of the Phantom is that he is fundamentally human. He just happens to be a fantastic illusionist).

I do have an issue with him not being able to sing operatically when his character is a superb OPERA teacher. Not just singing teacher, but OPERA teacher. (Experience has taught me that when it comes to opera, one must be able to sing it to teach it)

"I know some people will not like it, but a lot of the official reviews (David Pollard at moviecitynews.com for example) are extremely positive."

Can I just point out, before we get to the official/amateur review argument, that even an OFFICIAL review is only one person's opinion. Sheriden Morley hated CCBB. His entire review, however, was based on the fact that he hated the film - he openly said that. Hardly an unbiased review for joe public to draw its conclusions from. Official critics can be just as biased, vague, ignorant, or downright wrong as their amateur counterparts.

The New York Premiere is on Dec 12th...red carpet, cast, press galore and gobs of celebs to kick off the US showing. The cast will have been doing a major swing of appearances starting in London. By the time they hit NY they may be plenty tired. TSMrW will probably need a hug!

The film opens nationwide in limited release 12/22...then all over the US Jan 21st. (Gloriously, Buffalo is one of the limited release cities. Hoorah!)

Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

I am calling official, reviews that are from reputable sources, such as the NY Times, the moderator at phantomthemovie.warnerbros.com, etc. I don't trust a lot of the unofficial ones because it is many of them are very vague. Professional critics can be biased, vague, ignorant or downright wrong but if it is on a reputable site I can at least be sure that they have seen it.

Why don't the posters on this thread just admit they'll believe what they want to hear and defend against what they don't want to hear. J. Schumacher screws up everything he touches so I wouldn't be shocked the movie sucks, but if its brilliant good for him. As far as oscars go, people come on, oscar movies all get released in Decemeber and trust me there will be plenty to pick from. Its way to early to talk oscars.

I've never seen the stage show (probably one of very few people that hasn't, right?), so I have nothing to compare the movie to. Maybe that's a good thing - maybe not. I intend to see it at some time after it's release, but I won't wait in long lines on opening day.

How does anyone get a private screening? I've seen photos, heard clips and seen the "Angel of Music" video and I've liked it all. I think Gerard has a great voice. I think it's going to be a great movie.

Okay, I don't want this to sound like i'm jumping down your throat--but NO THE PHANTOM IS DEFINATELY NOT MENTALLY CHALLENGED! EVER! I'm sorry, I just want to make sure that people who aren't familiar with the show are aware of that because it is a very integral part of the plot. The Phantom (Erik) is a genius (not just musically, he excels in everything--hence the home under the Opera House that he built for himself), and that's the essence of the story: His genius is wasted because he will never be accepted because of his face.

Okay, now that that's out of my system: I think the problem wiht Gerard Butler's singing (and I can't TOTALLY judge because I've only heard the clips from the website) is that, while his voice is okay, it's just not good enough (or trained enough) for such a difficult role. And what makes that so disappointing is that, as someone on the board (I think Spiderj3) so nicely put it, the phantom hypnotizes people (using his voice--which is explained more thorougly in the book "Phantom" by Susan Kay, and eluded to in the original novel as well), and if his voice is just okay, you have to wonder how he manages to make such an impression on Christine in the first place.

Okay, thanks for listening to my rant--I'll try my best to not be a psychotic Phantom fan for the rest of the day re: should I see the phantom movie?

p.s. anyone know how to make things italic on the messages? Is there a way to do it?
