So, I went tonight to Scott Nevins' Variety Hour at Carolines and it was SO much fun. My first time at Caroline's EVER. Here's a little setlist:
Max Von Essen started the show, I forget what he sang, but he was fabulous of course.
Then Scott came on and did a little introduction and said that Tyler [Maynard] couldn't be there, but he was going to show a clip of Carol Channing from an old Alice in Wonderland tv show instead. HYSTERICAL. Nice substitute.
Then Julie Garnye came on, he [Scott] talked about her going on for Idina (who he refered to as the "green bitch" whose broom wasn't working that day) in Wicked once and blowing the roof off the house. She was FABULOUS. She sang "Gimme Gimme," from Millie.
Then it was the Farley Brothers, these two gay brothers (and they say being gay isn't genetic?) and they performed a song, which was also a drinking game where you had to take a drink everytime they said "bottom's up!" They had their martini glasses onstage with them. Soooooo funny!
Next up was Natalie Joy Johnson, and I forget what she sang, we'll title it "This Summer", but she was fabulous.
Next was John Hill, who Scott introduced as doing a 'revival' of an act that he'd done at one of his old concerts, from a show soon to be on Broadway. He sang Part of Their World from The Little Mermaid. He put on a brown wig, and wrapped a green sheet around part of his legs. He was HYSTERICAL. OMG, we were cracking up. Then at the end, Natalie came up and started spraying [then pouring] a spray bottle of water on him. SO funny.
Then two cast members from the Musical of Musicals came up and did the Webber spoof from that. It was funny, but too long!
Next up was Chad Kimball. Chad performed the song, or A song, from the upcoming Bon Jovi show, "Memphis", and OMG, he sounded AMAZING.
Then it was cast members from Forbidden Broadway, and they started out with a Sweet Charity-Christina Applegate parody, THEN they did a Lennon spoof. SO funny. LOVED it. We were all hysterical.
Next up was Michael Arden, and I have no idea what he sang, but he sounded fabulous, as usual!
Lastly was Eden Espinosa. For her concert that she's doing this Saturday at Town Hall, she'd been re-arranging a lot of songs with the musical director and sang one. She did Defying Gravity, kind of like Idina did it at one of her concerts, but this sounded better. She sounded amaaahzing.
The next one is November 17th, I think, and everyone should go, it's SUCH a good time.
PS: For anyone who was there tonight, I was one of the 'wild-jewish-paparazzi-lennon groupie' girls. So, sorry about that two minute delay in getting Chad up there to sing.

Actually, I think Scott said that Julie replaced Idina for the Actor's Fund benefit performance of Hair. Not in Wicked.

"....Max Von Essen started the show, I forget what he sang, but he was fabulous of course..."
Max sang the wonderful Kander & Ebb's tune, "Sing Happy". He’ll be singing it at Joe’s Pub this coming Sunday night at Jamie McGonnigal’s benefit concert, "With Love, From Broadway To The Bayou."
