Posted: 3/7/06 at 1:38pmDid they shoot that opening scene in the Nederlander Theater? My dad asked me that and I had not a clue. Does anybody know?

Posted: 3/7/06 at 1:39pmNo, it was shot in a theater in California. The name escapes me, however.

Posted: 3/7/06 at 4:07pmCan I just say that this scene made me really mad. Lol sorry I know no one cares, but it is NOT the Nederlander by any means, and I just don't understand why they would use some random stage instead of the NYTW stage (I have never been there, so I say this meaning if there is one which I assume there is) or the Nederlander with the RENT set, that would have been SO much better if he wanted to use a stage. I really dislike Christoper Columbus' work, even when he did the Harry Potter movies I hated his work- he leaves out really important things for no good reason and changes stupid things- although some things he changed in the RENT movie I thought worked well. Anyway, it just has always made me mad that they didn't use the real theater.

If you want to complain about all of Chris Columbus' decisions, go search for the 132423234 other threads doing that. Every little thing has been nitpicked by many (including by myself).
The movie and the stage show are completely different. Filming the opening segment on the Neder stage would have just been dumb, too sappy. NYTW's stage would have been one thing, but still somewhat sappy.

Posted: 3/7/06 at 5:27pmI wasn't really complaining, just making a comment. And I'm sorry but I disagree, yes maybe it would have been a bit sappy, but how did a random stage make any sense?? I understand he couldn't figure out where to put it but it just didn't make sense to me, and it would have at least made more of a connection to the show. And I know they are completely different I have been a fan of RENT the show for almost ten years.

Posted: 3/7/06 at 5:33pmThe show has played in many, many theaters aside from the Nederlander, and the point of that shot was to link it to its theatrical origins, not to one particular venue. I think seeing the set would have just been confusing to those who haven't seen the show on stage, and the small NYTW auditorium would have been unrepresentative of the vast majority of places it's played.

Posted: 3/7/06 at 5:35pmAnd I say unto you.. What difference does it even matter where that scene was filmed. You'd like it at the Nederlander for nostalgia's sake.. but in regards to the film - it doesn't matter if it was filmed there, or in a theater in siberia. Plus, I am sure cost/time constraints were a factor.

good point. I know they wanted to link it back to its theatrical origins, I just don't think he did such a great job. Oh well I did not want this to be a big thing- I just didn't really understand his choice for that scene- just my personal opinion- please disregard
