Just a quick question out of curiosity..how many seat fillers are usually chosen for the Tony Awards? I have heard that they can overbook and have a 'seat filler wait list'
And, I will be a seat filler for this Sunday, so does anyone know the protocol? I went to the 2006 Tonys and I remember seeing some seat fillers along the walls, but are some seat fillers not even present in the orchestra? Do you see the show the entire time you are one standing?
THanks!!
Bump :)
If I had virtual presents Id give them to people who could answer
:)
I've been a seat filler the past three years and am doing it again this year. I don't recall there being a waiting list ( even though the letter says there is one). They try to accommodate everyone. They split the group ( usually a couple dozen)into house left and house right and you line up against the walls. As seats become empty you are directed to sit in a seat from that line. Once you are done "filling" the seat you go back to the end of the line. For the most part you can see while you are in line. There are certain points in the line that you will be blocked by pillars, but the line usually moves quickly so you are not blocked for very long. Sometimes you get very lucky ( like I have the past couple of years) and fill a seat of a guest who never shows up and sit the entire night. I hope all of this helps and you don't even owe me any virtual presents :)

How do you apply to be a seat filler?
Seymour Krelborn -- what do you think the chances are that since I"m bringing a guest I will be with that guest for a large portion of the night? (And thanks for your response!)
I have two friends who seat filled together last year (but neither was the other's official "guest") and they did get split up for seating. It just depends on how many seats are open where. And then obviously you might not end up back on the line at the same time. I'm doing it this year with two friends, but I can't imagine we'll be together for much of the evening.
I've always gone with a friend and last year was the only year we were together (we happened to get seats next to each other for the entire night). Thats very rare. All the other time we have been split up. Sometimes on different sides of the theater, sometimes the same side. Either way we didn't see each other very much. We pre-planned a meeting place after the show. I would suggest you do the same, you never know.
How you'd two get split up onto different sides of teh theatre?
The year we were on different sides the person splitting the group up was just randomly picking people and saying "you go to the left" and "you go to the right". Most likely you will at lease end up on the same side. For the most part they pick who goes where based on the row your sitting in during "orientation". They will say something like "Row A, go to the left side". So as long as you are sitting together during orientation you should be fine.
Thank you very much for all of your information!
So all the seat fillers then are inside the orchestra for the entirety of the show, views only blocked by pillars (or from what I remember a large sound system in the middle too?)? THanks!
how do you apply to be a seat filler?
My friend has a relative who works in teh industry who allowed some people to just sign up..
Other than having an "in", I'm not sure, sorry
But last year I wrote a letter to the Tony Awards board or something and no response about being one..so maybe theres some specific form or something?
Bump...I realize this might be too early, but who do you call and such to be a seat filler?
I am bumping this again. Who do you contact to become a seat filler? I had a number on file, but they said it was no longer the number.

I was on a mailing list of people offered the chance to apply to be a seat filler a couple of years ago because I worked in the NY theater community. I've never heard of a broader lottery or anything.
I know of a couple of people on here who had the chance to be a seat filler...a fellow BWW member forwarded me a phone number, and I tried calling that today, but they said that number is not associated with the Tony Awards anymore.
I guess I could just try calling the line on the Tony Awards website, but I was seeing if there was a specific number to dial for this request to avoid all the transferring among numbers...thanks!
Does anyone know if there is an age requirement?
I am not sure Drunk Chita Rivera, but I would assume 18+ or at the least 16+.
