Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:33pmHow do they do the sets for the Tony performances? I was suprised to see the amount of sets used for the performances. I really liked Drowsy entrance through the floor, very cool. I thought Jersey Boys' set was huge. Do they just bring the set over from the theaters or do they make new sets just for that night or what? Since they have a matinee show the day of the Tony's, wouldn't it be hard to tear down that set and bring it over in a matter of hours?

Posted: 6/12/06 at 1:43pmI believe they are adapted replicas... like Wicked's set two years ago they built all new set pieces in the style of the original (clock of the time dragon...which is now in the lobby of the Gershwin). and this year, sweeney's set wasn't the real set at all really, except the coffin which is more of a prop.

They make variances... If you had a side by side shot - youd see the differences. But they were pretty damn good.
I think the money they saved by reusin the 2005 TONY set they used on the performances sets.

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

I'm pretty sure they've been reusing the actual Tony set since at least when Hugh first hosted a couple years ago...
It's fine and all, but honestly seems kinda cheap considering every other televised awards ceremony on earth can't help but change theirs every year.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 4:49pmI doubt they reuse the Tony set. Storage space in the the tri-state is ridiculous. They probably build everything in Brooklyn and drag it here every year.

the pajama game set was just drops painted to look like the sets.
drowsy gets kudos for making use of the big honking trapdoor that they used to unveil the 60 presenters (it actually made the fact that they needed the show to "come to life" a hell of alot more rapidly than it normally would)

Yeah, I thought the Drowsy entrance was really cool. Too bad they don't do that in the real show.
The Sweeney set looked good though. It was only the back wall though. I wish they had showed Lauren more, they didn't really show her at all. They should have focused on the whole playing the instruments thing.
I really liked the Color Purple set. Does the background really move like that in the show?
Jersey Boys' set was huge. I really liked it though. I really want to see that show now.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 9:03pmI found Sweeney's set up a bit distracting. I like when the light comes from the floor more than from the back wall. It made it harder to see.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 10:18pmThey lights in Sweeney do come from the back wall as well as the floor in Sweeney.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 10:23pmYeah, it did some brighter than normal, but it sort of gave off an eery effect by just showcasing their silhouettes.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 10:26pmThat's not at all what the Color Purple set looks like.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 10:30pmno, I know about the set in the actual show, but the way that ALL of the light came from the back wall made it really difficult to see, IMO.

Yeah, I agree. Although, I thought it sort of worked, except you couldn't really see who anyone was besides Mano, Patti, and Michael.
Really Yankee? I thought that set looked so cool ha.
