So I understand that Ghostlight is a division of Sh-K-Boom Records, and that Ghostlight is supposed to be a place for musicals to get cast recordings. Is it simply that Ghostlight records musicals and Sh-K-Boom does solo CD's and stuff? Or does Sh-K-Boom do the musicals that have more of a pop edge to it? And if that's how it is, why did Ghostlight record HAIR and not Sh-K-Boom?

I think Ghostlight was created to focus on musical theater, an effort to separate cast recordings and other CDs.

Sorry for a threadjack here, but does anyone know the origin of the Ghostlight name? It sounds sort of random to me

A ghostlight is what a theatre is lit by at night.

I don't know. I know they're both owned by the same person. I think maybe its simply just another record company. I think Ghostlight is more Broadway based, where sh-k-boom does more of the solo albums or benefit type stuff. Where as Ghostlight is soley for cast albums.

Don't worry about the jack, because I know the answer. But then I'm jacking it right back! re: Sh-K-Boom/Ghostlight - difference?

Here's what the website says: "It is a long-time practice in the theatre that a ghost light - a floor lamp holding a single bare light buld - be lit on stage after everyone has left for the night, so that the theatre never goes dark.

In the spirit of preserving the music of the theatre by composers old and new, Ghostlight Records will honor the past while shining a light towards the future."

So I understand that Ghostlight is going to focus on musical theatre, but if they're now the musical theatre company, why is Sh-K-Boom recording Altar Boyz?

"Ghostlight" refers to the fact that no theatre is ever left completely dark at anytime. When the actors and crew leave the theatre...a single light on a pole is lit and placed in the center of the stage to keep away all ghosts and spirits that may haunt that theatre...thus it is called the "ghostlight."

With a name like that it seems evident that "Ghostlight" was created to focus on the recording of musical theatre.

Yes, I understand that. My question is this: Ghostlight is part of Sh-K-Boom. When it was created, it was my understanding that Ghostlight would be dedicated ONLY to musical theatre and Sh-K-Boom would continue the way it started: with presenting solo albums by Broadway artists. But Sh-K-Boom has continued to record musicals cast albums (like Altar Boyz), even though that's what Ghostlight is there for. It just seems like the difference isn't clear enough.

Perhaps "Ghostlight" will only focus on recording Broadway productions?

Then how do you explain The New Moon? Or Finian's Rainbow? Or HAIR? Or Christine Ebersole/Billy Stritch?

See?! It's confusing!

ha, I think it's pretty simple:

Sh-k-Boom was created to give musical theatre people who wanted to write and semi-cross over to pop/rock music a chance to do that. That's why they recorded Adam, Sherie Rene (aside from the fact that she co-founded) Alice Ripley, etc. As they expanded, they started recording some musicals, too, and Ghostlight is now going to be the division that focuses on the musicals, while the original division does the "musical theatre meets pop music" deal.

I believe Altar Boyz is being recorded under sh-k-boom to continue the joke that they are "really" a pop band
I actually heard at one time they were making a fake christian label for them as well
