I plan on trying to get tickets sometime this week, and my mom is worried because of the lateness and the possibility of getting mugged. And parking.

I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences or whatever...and if they know of any nearby parking garages. Is going there at 8AM too late?

It sort of varies day to day. If you go before Friday than 8 AM will be just fine but it'll probably be fairly packed this weekend as I believe it closes Sunday. I have done Shakespeare in the Park about 6 times and have always gotten there VERY early (around 3-4 ish but I'm insane) and have never felt scared or unsafe even by myself. there's always a group of people there too so I wouldn't really be worried about getting mugged. I'm not sure about parking but I'm sure if you poke about online you can find a garage in the vicinity.
don't forget trying the online lotto. maybe do that a few days and then if you don't win before the end of the week try the line

Good luck with parking. Considering that it is Central Park there isn't much in the way of parking nearby. Unless you want to risk a ticket and park on the street.

You will be safe in the Park. Remember your going to the same place where a large group of people are going as well. Therefor your fine. Chances are there are going to be a large mass of people entering the same time you enter and leaving the same time you leave.

I also think that getting there at 8 is cutting a bit close. Only because they are very prompt with start times. I would get there no earlier then you would for let's say any Broadway show you are going to.

"I plan on trying to get tickets sometime this week, and my mom is worried because of the lateness and the possibility of getting mugged."

That theater holds 2,000 people. The only thing your mom needs to worry about is you not getting trampled as the audience leaves the Park. There are people all over the place.

Don't forget that you can also try for tickets online. Go to the Public's website for information.

Yeah, I'm not so worried about getting mugged myself, but my parents freak out about these things and half-expect me to get kidnapped whenever I go anywhere alone. And I figured there would be a lot of people in that area in particular.

I've submitted for tickets online at least 4 or 5 times for the past two weeks and haven't had any luck...I kind of wish that I tried earlier.

I think I'll try going there on Thurdsay around 6 or 7...thanks for the responses.

I just got back from an EXCELLENT performance.
Completely full audience.
Beautiful night. Perhaps the best weather EVER.

Michael Stuhlbarg is EXCEPTIONAL!!!

My first time at the Delacorte.

PS: The blood at the end of the show is AWESOME. Me shuddered at Claudius' gory-fountain demise.

My experience: I knew for a FACT that I was going to be unable to do any of the early-morning waiting for this run.

Instead, I was trying the online lotto (visit PublicTheater.org for details). However, the chances of winning the online-lotto are very slim.

My co-worker told me that she had success with the stand-by line. If you get to the Delacorte somewhere between 4PM-5:30PM, you get in a line that winds down the sidewalk. And most people who get there BEFORE 5:30PM get in (that is, if you're in the line BEFORE the second lamppost).

I got in line today at 5:30PM (that was cutting it close!) with about 75 people in front of me. I waited until 7:55PM, when they let the line in, and got a fine seat. (3rd row house-left). However, I'm willing to bet miles of people behind me didn't get in.

I don't have a clue about parking. I took the C-Train to 81st Street. The show begins at 8PM and is over at 11:15PM. Plan accordingly. If you do the stand-by line, bring plenty of food and water.

I know for the online lotto you have a better chance the earlier you sign up. I did that the first time. If you sign up at midnight the night before you want to go you have a better chance then if you do sign up let's say in the morning before you go off to work.

However, even though I won the ticket lotto online that way. I didn't go because it looked like there was going to be a major rain storm coming and I didn't want to go to the city only to get turned away due to the weather to have to come back home. I didn't go and lo an behold it didn't rain at all. However, I did make a great friend at Saved which I saw my first time that night instead. In retrospect I am glad that I didn't go because I wouldn't have discovered a new good musical that I didn't see nor would I have met a new friend. I guess it worked out in the end. However, I am going to try the online ticket lotto before I go to see if I can try to see it before it closes. Hamlet is something that I read in english class last year and it would make seeing the play a lot easier for me considering that I broke it down bit by bit last year and have a better understanding of the text then I would going in and not knowing it at all. Due to the fact that I read it in english class last year it has become a play that I have wanted to see for some time. And, I don't know if I will have a chance to see it again soon. However, considering that I live in New York and considering that this is Hamlet I am sure I will be able to see a production of it at some point down the line. I am sure it won't be as good a production as the Public does but it will be a production of Hamlet nonetheless.

Winston, I'd have to disagree with the earlier you sign up thing. I've signed up in the moments after midnight more times than I hve at other times and have YET to win.
